We were lucky to catch up with Jimmy Murn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jimmy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Arise Shine Center was born years ago in a smalltown in Wisconsin. Whereas I was a bright, outgoing child through about 4th grade everything that followed was unfortunate. My parents split and as school went along I realized that the teachers were not interested my view, my well-being, my ambitions. I began quitting sports and extracurriculars and my natural desire for learning started waning as depression arose and survival became my mindset. In college I could get A’s at a great private school without studying but no one was connecting with me so I was just experiencing memorizing and repeating information which came at a financial, social-emotional, and perhaps even spiritual cost.
Our goal is to bridge build and connect with students so they may be heard and have guidance and life skills to meet all of life’s challenges.
We often see great results in a short period of time with kids from diverse backgrounds and learning needs. We get to see the light come on for those who weren’t thriving in their school setting.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started in the childcare industry in 2010 nannying in Wisconsin. I moved to Los Angeles in 2015 on a calculated risk knowing that I had a gift.
Arise Shine Center provides 3 Services: Mentoring and Life Skills classes, Bright Knights classes, and supporting Curriculum.
We help kids be seen and heard and walk them through the Hero’s Journey in our immersive Bright Knights classes where they pick up polestars (Courage, Gratitude, Humility) and their practical application.
To be able to see kids work through growth edges and get wins and break-throughs on the regular is of course, incredibly rewarding.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency. I wrote a 30-page Teacher Training on connecting with kids and the 1st Module is Teacher Commitment. This is helpful for parents as well. It is all about Showing Up. The settings we create and the energy we put forth for kids is warm and nurturing. The bottom line is if you work for Arise Shine Center we have a Vince Lombardi-esque commitment to Showing Up. This does not resonate for everyone but this is the foundation of my life and the business.
I am still working on showing up for myself, but showing up for the kids and for work is an absolute.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My whole life is a case study in resilience.
I don’t have a college degree. I didn’t have a present father post 9-yo. We grew up below the poverty line. I have addiction and have been sober for 13 years. I don’t have any investors. I moved here without an apartment and my money ran down to less than a $100 and I slept in my car some nights before I finally got work. I have lived in physical pain from sports injuries for almost 30 years.
Never give up.
