We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jimmy Hall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jimmy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
Though my past jobs aren’t what I ended up ultimately doing, the lessons learned inspired the ethos of Tree Fifty Four. For example, during my time in the Air Force I learned discipline and integrity. I use these now to make tomorrow easier by making todays work count and providing a consistent, quality experience throughout the entire Herbal Lineup.
After over nearly a decade serving, I started my civilian journey in finance. I had the opportunity to meet everyone from local employees and small business owners they worked for to the very wealthy of the area. It was here I learned to look at problems from different perspectives leading me to unique solutions.
Jimmy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I make hand-crafted Herbal Blends using Organic & Wildcrafted herbs sourced from around the world. Everything from Egyptian Lotus & Butterfly Pea, to Yerba Maté, Mugwort, & Mullein. There’s minty fresh blends, fragrant calming blends, and caffeinated creations to give to a natural boost with no crash. To name a few: Focus Up is a minty, caffeinated afternoon blend to give you a gentle nudge in the right direction, Lucid Dreamz is a non-caffeinated night time blend aiding in sleep, lucid dreaming, and dream retention, & Peace O’ Mind is a calming, anytime, anti-anxiety blend to relax the nerves and bring peace into your space.
What sets me apart is the care I take to find the right herbs that will work in tandem to bring their most unique & vibrant qualities and benefits to you. With 40+ Herbal Blends, Teas, & Singles to choose from, there’s surly something everyone can enjoy.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I do manufacture everything in house. For the packaging, I started out making t-shirts with a hobby heat press, some transfer paper, and a very limited knowledge of graphic design. Over the months of creating new blends and designing the labels for them, I’ve gotten not only more comfortable with the design software, but in my talents in general.
Creating blends is my happy place. Creating the blends came from my passion for cooking and adding spices by the potency of their smells and effects. I brought that concept here, to my herbs, and it’s allowed to make deliciously balanced herbal blends and share them so many people.
Everything is put together with the customer in mind — no plastic, no artificial flavors or colors, and ethically sourced herbs — Each sachet come with infusers, making it easy to start your herbal journey right away!
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Currently I’m able to provide my products on Amazon, Etsy, and Faire with plans to sell on my website coming soon. Each of the platforms has their own pros and cons to get used to and work out as set them up. Amazon really helps get your product out to a lot of people and Prime shipping is amazing, the folks who shop on Etsy are absolutely wonderful, and Faire wholesale is probably my favorite at the moment. Faire allows other small business owners to buy at wholesale prices and every order is an honor. It’s a great feeling that other business’s want to have my blends on their shelves.
As far as cons — Fees! Fees everywhere lol…But you learn, adjust, and find a sweet spot.
