We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jimin Park a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jimin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
In 2016 freshly graduated from RISD Graphic Design department, I went into this mass production apparel company that most people would recognize when they hear the name. That was my first job and the only prior job. The title I applied for was a “Brand Designer” which I thought I could pursue my dream of being a logo designer creating the identity of the brand. In a way the job was still within that realm, but not quite. Since it was an apparel company I was adjusting the brand’s logo printed on the garments following the season and trends. The work had to do more with the fashion design area which I had not a lot of experience at. I would be teaming up with the apparel team with their design and materials of the garment and figure out what kind of print would work for them. Working hours were brutal and the work environment probably did not fit my personality. Since it was the first job I probably chew off more than I could too. After working about 12-14 hours everyday I was experiencing anxiety attacks from the built up stress. I was definitely missing out on something important in life and the body symptoms were merely alarm sent to myself saying something is off. Humans are not built to be a robot generating assets all day long, especially for creatives. I quickly prepared to move to another job which I have done to survive from drowning.
After being able to live a work-life balanced life I started meditating to work on my anxieties. That was when my closed off narrow mind only thinking of myself has broadened with some intense spiritual awakening experiences. It was almost like being born again as a different person. The information I was receiving from the world and the reaction to those has drastically changed. The 3D world was somehow magically transformed into a 4D world with beautiful energies flowing everywere constantly. From the years of meditation practice I look back at the harsh time I had gone through from my prior job and see that time to be a blessing – a great lesson to break from my own ignorance. Now I have learned that our true life purpose comes from the ease, filling the air around us with universal love. It is the matter of noticing the love and sharing the love with people around us. Now I work as a graphic designer and better work come out from genuine curiosity and care. To specify, it’s about how I as a graphic designer consider deeply what any client would need for the greatest good, by putting ourselves in their shoes. The purest creativity simply flows gently in our heart and outside of us.

Jimin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have worked on many different client works from my current workplace which is a design agency. I was always a pretty shy art kid from my childhood and went to art school, eventually becoming a graphic designer. Problem solving is probably the Step 1 of any kind of design work, which I happen to enjoy. I’ve worked on couple of campaigns which is always fun to work on for it being a concise but powerful theme to work on. Sleepyhead Campaign, COVID-19 Mark Campagin, and Walking Dead x Sexton Whiskey projects can be some examples of it. I’ve also enjoyed couple of brand identity work by creating the whole image of the brand. One example would be AVID packaging design, web design applications, and web banners. The rest of my work are for retainer clients, such as building movie assets that goes into FIOS TV screen which is cool to be up to date on what new show that we can watch.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My simple goal of my life and creative journey is to live for others and the whole universe – which will include myself but I will simply follow the stream of the flow with no resistance. I truly believe when your work is created with the heart from the infinite source filled with love, people will notice it slowly filling the world with life and goodness.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Eckhart Tolle – Power of Now has been an inspiring book for me broadening my viewpoint and ultimately allowed me to focus on Now instead of focusing on regrets of the past. No matter what we have experienced in the past we are living the present moment manifesting whatever we want to. We are all magicians but simply forgot that we are. Every moment we are creating what we love, and that love can be sorrow, abundance, passion, fear because they are all different words of love. I hope everybody can be an active creator creating what they want to starting NOW.
