We were lucky to catch up with Jimica Sayles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jimica, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Taking risks always produces rewards! This is what I would tell anyone thinking about taking a risk, great or small. I learned this very early in life, and I’ve taken many risks—some were great, and some were not so much, but I learned from them all. In business, as a licensed stylist, I’ve opened two salons and closed them both. But what some saw as a loss, I saw as an opportunity for experience and growth, and boy, did I learn a lot!
I had to close my salon during the pandemic, and what could’ve been tragic turned into me taking a risk of posting one video about hair and the pandemic, and it went viral! That video led me to content creation, opening the door to many opportunities for me to grow and spread laughter through hairstyling and comedy. To God be the glory!
How can you know what you’re capable of if you never try? I’ve always been optimistic, and I’ve learned so much along my journey that I am now able to pour into other business owners and help creators along their journey. I say all this to say, if you don’t take the risk, how can you experience the reward of growth, exposure, and wisdom? So the next time you’re presented with an opportunity, may God help you take the risk, because there’s always a reward.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the beauty industry because I was raised in it. I come from a family of stylists, and it’s a God-given talent that I knew I was called to do from a very young age. I watched how my mother’s clients would come into the salon and saw how they felt when leaving the salon, and I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do! Yes, it requires focus, skill, knowledge, and discipline to execute and produce great styling. But the joy and confidence it brings are worth it all!
I provide professional hairstyling and makeup services. My motto is, “Healthy hair first, with the option to have fun with your hair and create beautiful styles!” My goal is to provide an enjoyable, relaxing service and experience for my clients every time they schedule with me. From regular salon visits to special occasions like weddings, baby showers, or events!
What sets me apart, or what can set anyone apart, is allowing God to use me to be of service to my clients. Whether it be through letting them vent or having a silent appointment, I’m glad to be able to serve and use the gift God gave me to be a light and provide service!
I’m extremely proud that over the 17 years of being in the beauty industry, I am still able to do what I love and give love through the art of styling. I want people to know that I give all the glory to God for sustaining my career this long and allowing me, a single mother, to do what she loves through hair and hair comedy while providing for my son and family. I am also grateful for the opportunity to grow my community and family through the art of hair. I truly love what I do!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic was tough on us all and marked the most pivotal time in my career. It was the first time I was forced to close the doors and had to figure things out like everyone else. I had to learn to trust that God would get me through, and He did.
While the pandemic caused a rift, it never destroyed my calling. I did lose some clientele and had to adjust to closing my salon and now having a suite mate. However, I’m glad to be where I am supposed to be at this time in my life.
Pivots and endings are simply a new direction on my journey.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The best advice I can give you on social media is to BE YOURSELF and take breaks from it. Social media is a tool, so don’t allow it to consume you.
Create quality content and work with what you have; don’t wait to have it all, that will come. Remember to let social media be just that, a tool, and not your life’s measuring stick. We are all on different growth charts and journeys, so enjoy your path! Use it as a tool to connect and develop your ideas or business, and if that’s not your forte, you can always hire someone to manage it!
Live in real life, in real time, and use social media as a tool.
