We recently connected with Jim Seamons and have shared our conversation below.
Jim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
This is always a difficult to explain, when I tell people I grow pumpkins they respond that that is cool. Kinda give me the expression that he’s just a farmer! I take growing pumpkins to a whole new level. Over the past few years I started growing Atlantic Giant pumpkins for fall display’s, company parties and high end events. What does that mean? I grow pumpkins that range in size from 300 pounds to my biggest so far 1,870 pounds. The cost of doing so and the techniques learned are far above that of a carving pumpkin. Who buys them? Anyone wanting a unique display for photo ops, professional carvings (center piece) to pumpkin regatta’s and pumpkin drops. Along with the giants I got into growing pumpkins in molds with faces. We ship coast to coast and provide several to high end events around the US. They are unique and often times one of a kind that brings the awe and scare to the Halloween season and countless questions to follow. Most common is, are they real? How? Where? And so on.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I do sell to the general public and can most times arrange shipping. We are based out of Northern Ut and supply unique pumpkins to our largest buyer Pumpkin Nights that is currently running in Fort Worth and Austin Texas. A few events in Arizona and through out Utah. We sell quite a few Atlantic Giants to company parties here in Utah which hire a professional carver for their event. Our full mold pumpkins can easily be shipped Via UPS. We have shipped to nearly every state except Hawaii so far. So how did I get into it? Finishing college studying international business and I took over the family dairy farm. Over 20 years I built the farm up then got tired of managing a dairy farm. I always wanted to grow a giant or bigger pumpkin. Found out a little about the genetics and variety. I grew a few over 600 pounds one year and was approached by Adam Smith, a professional carver here in Utah. He bought a few to carve at company parties and each year there after we sold a few more and Adam carved them. Over time I found other carvers and events as things developed in a very unique business’. Then we decided to shut the dairy down, in doing so we sold off half the farm to settle debts associated with the business and restructured ourselves to grow unique pumpkins. I found a company in China that makes the face parts for molds and we decided to try them. Currently we have about 1,500 molds and it’s been a learning experience. Each year we expand a little more and find a few more clients. In 2022 I started carving, I don’t take on the title of professional pumpkin carver but I do manage to put a few smiles on faces as my carvings come to life and my technique improves .

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Social media is a big tool in getting our products out there to be seen. I found it important to follow up as much as possible with comments’ but more importantly messages. Fast response is always best and it can be at any hour. Along with social media comes a lot of negativity, stay out of it and side step. Don’t let others drag you down.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Using social media I have found it best to try and keep putting my best products forward however since my pumpkins are so unique I do put out there my failures and difficulties in growing both around mother nature and in plastic molds. I strive for quality and producing better quality than the year before therefore I am always trying something new. When new clients come in they can see through my social media what our process is and how we produce.
