In the company of kindred spirits like Adam Wayne and Robin Blakey, whose support and camaraderie have been the bedrock of my endeavors, I transformed my fervor for hiking into a thriving venture. The initial concept, under the moniker Secret Mountain Adventure Sports Headquarters (SMASH Tours), was the brainchild of Adam and his associates. Although SMASH Tours never saw the light of day, it paved the way for the emergence of Sedona Hiking Adventures.
A pivotal choice loomed ahead – a choice that would shape the course of my life. With the radiant landscapes of Sedona as my muse and hiking as my expertise, I resolved to establish my own tour company. I owe an immense debt of gratitude to both Adam and Robin for their unwavering assistance and belief in my journey from the very start.
By 2004, a mere three years since setting foot in Sedona, my calling crystallized. Fueled by the timeless wisdom of pursuing one’s passions, I recognized the symphony of desires within me: an ardor for hiking and an unquenchable fascination with the vermilion-hued rocks that define the region. It was within this revelation that the cornerstone of Sedona Hiking Adventures was laid.
As I traversed Sedona’s trails, I not only introduced people to its natural wonders but also shared my dedication to environmentalism and recycling. Crafting personalized hiking tours became my hallmark, a reflection of my commitment to creating authentic and memorable experiences.

Back in 2004, the year when I embarked on this journey, I had a vision – a vision of breaking free from the monotony of working for others and diving headfirst into what I truly loved: hiking. Hiking was more than a hobby; it was the reason I had relocated to Sedona in the first place. With that in mind, I laid the foundation for Sedona Hiking Adventures, a venture that would allow me to not only make a living but also do what I cherished most – hiking every single day.
Creating the business, designing the website, and crafting tours inspired by my favorite hikes seemed like a straightforward process. I poured my heart into it, and it didn’t take long for Sedona Hiking Adventures to take shape. However, as with most things in life, the path ahead was anything but simple. Challenges emerged that I hadn’t anticipated, taking me on a journey of unexpected twists and turns.
One of the most surprising challenges came from the Red Rock Ranger District when I applied for an outfitter guide permit. Their response left me baffled and frustrated. They claimed that “no one comes to Sedona to go hiking,” and thus, hiking permits were not available. Undeterred by their baffling stance, I chose to continue offering hiking tours to visitors who came from all corners of the globe. While the business was flourishing, my relationship with the Ranger District grew strained. They held me accountable for a permit that simply did not exist, even going so far as to threaten legal action and label me an outlaw.
From 2004 to 2012, I danced on the tightrope of legality, carefully avoiding traps set by the Ranger District. The challenge was to continue providing the tours I loved while navigating this complex regulatory environment. But in 2012, my luck ran out. During a hiking tour around Airport Mesa, the Ranger District intercepted my group of customers and caught me in the act. The penalties for guiding illegally were daunting, ranging from fines to potential jail time and even a ban from hiking altogether. It was a moment that demanded a pivotal decision.
In response, I made a pivotal choice – to rebrand as Sedona Red Rock Adventures. This shift marked a turning point where I transitioned from offering hiking tours to vehicle-based scenic tours. The Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon joined the lineup, broadening the scope of what I could offer. While the decision was born out of necessity, it became a catalyst for growth, resilience, and adaptation.
But the story didn’t end there. A new chapter was about to unfold, leading to the creation of Wine Tours of Sedona. This brand, an amalgamation of my passion for Sedona and the allure of Arizona wines, encapsulated a new vision. Every experience, from scenic tours to wine tastings, found its home under this singular banner. It was a moment of convergence, where all my past incarnations found new life in a unified narrative.
