We were lucky to catch up with JIM OSORNO recently and have shared our conversation below.

JIM, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?

Growing up, my big dream was to perform on Broadway. I worked hard, studied, took class and auditioned, auditioned, auditioned. My dream came true and for several years I was singing + dancing in numerous Broadway shows! I baked treats for rehearsals, opening nights + intermissions. When I thought of starting my own baking company, I knew the name was perfect — Broadway Baker.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I grew up baking + cooking with my family. My mom, dad + Grandma O were my guides + mentors. Many of the recipes we use at Broadway Baker are based on their original delicious recipes. We create + bake our goods in small batches using premium ingredients and as many local + organic ingredients we can get our hands on—I shop at our local farmers markets twice a week.
We have our core customer favorites that we produce constantly and we add seasonal items throughout the year.
Since we opened our storefront, we’ve been voted Santa Monica’s Most Loved Bakery and the LA Times’ Best Westside Bakery.
Our storefront + open kitchen is open Tuesday-Friday 9a-4p and Saturday 9a-1p. Daily offerings include scones, muffins, Rugelach, cupcakes, cookies, brownies + bars.
My Grandma O’s coffee cake is served on Thursdays and on Fridays + Saturdays, we make cinnamon rolls, chocolate babka, strawberry pop tarts, brioche, and many other fun + tasty treats.
We create beautiful + delicious gift boxes for all of your gifting needs and we’re super excited for our upcoming holiday offerings.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Word of mouth. Our customers are simply the best and they have spread the word about Broadway Baker from day 1. We’re all about creating delicious, beautiful, consistent, quality food and we take pride in our execution and our products.
I’m very specific about what ingredients we use, our process and making sure everything is just right so that our customers and clients can enjoy our goods time and again.
We love our customers and love that they tell their friends, families + colleagues about us!

Just do it. Don’t wait. Don’t overthink. Just get out there and do what U love to do. You will find your audience and your audience will find you! Build it and they will come.
Trust your instincts, be brave and go for it.
And be willing to be flexible; bend with changes that happen, things that suddenly come up, or unexpected situations.
