We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jim Love. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jim below.
Hi Jim, thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I had just started in this world of motivational speaker in 2015 and did a conference for free. I was 24 years old and had no idea other people would want to hear me speak.
That’s when my high school reached to me about their “leadership week” and wanted me to speak at it. This was the FULL school (700 men). My school asked me how much I charged. I had NO idea how to answer that question. I asked for gas money! Lesson learned :). But receiving a check of any nominal fee felt like my words had value. That changed everything for me and made me realize it was time to take this seriously.

Jim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a high energy, eccentric motivational speaker who covers authentic leadership, mental health, self love, gratitude and finding your voice.
I offer a relatable story for all ages and make all the leaders feel empowered and important in the process. What sets me apart is my style; I am loud, energetic and enthusiastic. I can command a room quickly.
I offer several versions of my 1 hour keynote talk; I make it customized for each client who works with me. Additionally, I offer breakout sessions and the ability for all attendees to use me as a resource.
I have been doing this professionally for 10 years; I love what I do and enjoy every chance to speak!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word-of-mouth is my best source. When a client has a great experience with me, I request that they tell their network about my services. This is an amazing way to get my word out with trusted resources!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
COVID nearly crumbled my business as in-person speaking events didn’t exist. I had to quickly pivot to offerings prerecorded videos and live keynotes over Zoom.
It was difficult, but I put my full self into it and it was successful. You have to be able to navigate any adversity as you’re owning a business. I just moved forward and kept learning!
