We recently connected with Jim Louvau and have shared our conversation below.
Jim, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Every day living in the art world is taking a risk. Technology, vibes, music, and people change on a constant basis. I’m just trying to run through burning houses just to see if I can make it out alive
Jim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jim Louvau, I’m a musical and visual creative artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. I grew up on rock n’ roll which turned me on to the idea of becoming a musician from as far back as I can remember. My band There is No Us signed with Cleopatra Records in late 2022 and we’ve spent most of this year releasing music and building a name for ourselves. When I’m not on stage singing or writing with the band I am a photographer and music video director. I work with other artists on a regular basis and I connect with them from a musical and creative mindset. My experience being on both sides of the camera makes working with other creatives a natural and comfortable place for both parties and I’m able to push others the same way I like to be pushed to maximize our experience together.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The journey is endless, it’s supposed to be if it’s pure and being a creative is your path. Often times I’m asked what exactly it is that I do, and my response if I choose to answer is generally along the lines of “that’s a loaded question” because explaining to others who aren’t in the same fields as I am can be very uncomfortable because when that baggage starts to become unpacked the questions almost never end. With that said the conversation usually turns to people asking me how I got here. The response is simple, I just never quit pursuing my interests because I never moved on from them. The cockroach wins the race almost every time because they are nearly impossible to eliminate and they outlast the others. That’s the secret, take it and be the last person standing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a musician I enjoy creating music that moves me and makes me feel alive with my band members. Then we take that music into a live setting and it’s an explosion of energy that is unexplainable. On the visual side of things it’s the ability to execute a plan or a vision that I create with others artists that tells the story of what they are trying to say whether it’s from a photography or video standpoint. Seeing my work out in the wild will never get old, holding something I’ve created in my hands is also a special feeling.
