We recently connected with Jim Crye and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jim, thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Before I became a personal trainer I was a high-school teacher for 17 years. I also was a semi-pro level rock musician for several years. Being a musician was my dream since childhood, but the universe had different plans for my life. I’ve been a fitness enthusiaist for several years and finally earned my PT license in late 2024. I now work as a fitness specialist for Seniors in a retirement community. The most important lesson I have learned is about myself. I have learned that my purpose is to inspire people to achieve their goals by example.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My dream, since I was a child, was to be a famous rockstar. Then life happened – children, bills, etc. I earned my bachelors degree in 2007 to help find a decent paying job/career. I became a high school teacher in 2008. I loved that job because I was in a position of influence and guidance for young people. At the end of 2024 school year I decided to puruse other interests and became a Personal Trainer. I wanted to use that skill and drive to help people live better and healthier lives. I now work as a fitness specialist for seniors at a retirement home. I help them with their balance, stability and mobility issues (quality of life fitness). My whole working life – from music to teaching to personal training- has been about inspiring people to be successful in their goals.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back I think that I would have chosen to be a full-time musician and would have pressed forward with that dream. But I have no regrets about how my life turned out because I did achieve excellence and accomplishments with the careers I did choose.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A life lesson that I had to unlearn was that destiny/fate is not a given (for me I thought my destiny was to be a famous rockstar). I had to learn that you do the best you can and if you fail you still know that you gave it 100% and you move on. I had to learn to accept the way things are instead of wishing them to be any other way.
