We were lucky to catch up with Jillian Slayton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jillian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Big thanks you to My friends and family. I wouldn’t be here with out all of your guys love and support
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
well Hello, I’m Jillian.
Im from Dearborn, Michigan. Im currently a Licensed Esthetician. I graduated from Dorsey School of beauty.
Where it all started …
Ive been a Lash Artist for almost 2 years now. I decided to become a Lash Artist from a lashing experience I had.
I was only getting my Lashes done for about a year at this time, I wasn’t educated about lash extensions at all. I was just getting them because it was the new thing you had to have.
My lash Artist couldn’t get me in before my vacation, so I found someone else to go to.
I got my lashes done, and my lashes where all ‘clumped/clustered’ together, which means my lash artist did not place the lashes extensions properly on my natural lashes. So they were all stuck together. this is how your lashes fall out.
are your lashes ever ‘too heavy?’ well.. they aren’t supposed to be and that means your lashes probably aren’t placed properly. you shouldn’t even feel them on your eyes… & This is where my Lash Journey begun.
I went to school to become a lash Artist, but I just felt like one class wasn’t enough. So I took a few lash classes and learned alot, but I also leaned a lot on my own over the years.
first thing I found out that alot of people do not know is you need to be a Licensed Esthetician or Cosmetologist to be working with any kind of certification (depending on your state).. don’t be scared to ask your lash artist if she is certified or Licensed, there is a HUGE difference.. make sure to do your research!
I took a lot away from my lash Artists, I look at how other people service their clients & I think of how I would better my service for my clients. I’ve been told and what sets me apart is, I love making my clients feel comfortable. I have alot of new girls that come to me with horror stories, come to me with ‘clumped/clustered’ lashes. So I take the time to educate my clients, my clients know What am I doing, know what I’m using, and most important to educate your clients!!!
My clients absolute love when they are aware of the things going on.
It will not hurt anyone but, benefit you in the long run to take and extra 15-20 minutes to talk with your client, make sure you answered every single question or concern they have regarding that service you are providing.
How did you build your audience on social media?
This is something I wish i could of had some guidance with when I was starting, Social media is easy to grow, but also so hard when you start out.
Content is EVERYTHINNGGG!!! it took me so long to set up my Lash page, get followers, gain clientele. Its alot and when you are doing everything yourself its even harder to keep your social media updated, but DONT GIVE UP! trust me, I was there wanting to just throw it all away because I wasn’t getting followers or bookings or likes…
I personally only use Instagram for my page, I run all my thing so I found one app that really benefits me, but start off where you know your aduance is. you want people who are interested in your services. Also you want to make sure you’re going to grab the attention of someone who is interested so make sure what your are posting will gain that attention.
Follow people who are in your industry, show others in your industry love even if you don’t know them! The biggest thing I see alot of people struggle with is asking question. How do you think I came this far? lol. ask all the question you need, there is never a wrong answer, its only going to benefit you.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Where It started all before my Beauty life…
I bet you couldn’t guess it but, when I graduated from High school in 2017, I went to collage. I was going to go be a Homicide Detective.
I grew up on Law and Order, First 48, Murder Documentaries, anything and everything with sloving a case I was watching it.
I went to Collage for 2 years after high school. ick.
Lol I loved it, I met so many people, I’ve leaned SOO much about the law. somethings make me wish I would of followed through and finished, but everything happens for a reason.
I started to get my lashes done towards the end of my second year.. And its history from there.
I found my passion, I help people in ways I wanted to be helped. I help improve peoples biggest insecurities, their skin. I couldn’t be happier with the career I am currently pursing.
Maybe one day I will come back and finish my schooling, and do 2 things I love.
