Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jillian Rose Kling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jillian Rose, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Since I was a pre-teen, I was interested in photography. I used to have my friends dress up and pose for me in the front yard and pretend we were shooting for YM or Teen magazines. On family vacations, I was the taking photos, preserving memories and always had a camera in my hand. When I was going through college, nothing kept my interest long enough to maintain a good grade until I switched my major from psychology to journalism with an emphasis in photography. From there I was hooked on documentary photography and it quickly turned into a career.
Jillian Rose, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m primarily a lifestyle portrait and wedding photographer. My passion for human connection and appreciation for documenting life’s greatest milestones are what inspire me. I have an innate ability to bring calm and comfort to my clients when they are feeling shy, uncomfortable or stressed.
Before I started my company, I used to work at a well known museum and often found myself sitting at my desk, day dreaming about being one of the many people visiting on a random Tuesday. It felt so attainable to be in a position like that and I never thought I would get out of working a regular 9-5. Here I am over 15 years later visiting those museums mid-week, making my own schedule, working with people that inspire me and built a career that fulfills me! I still cant believe it sometimes.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The wedding and events industry is huge but very tight knit and reputation is everything! Consistency and being a team player gets you a very long way. One of my favorite parts of this job is relationship building both with vendors, other event professionals and my clients. I strive to leave a positive long lasting impression on everyone I come into contact with.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Emotion is a driving force for me any many other creatives I talk to. Being a wedding photographer is a job but also an art and as a service provider you have to find that balance to achieving both so you can deliver to your clients but also stay fulfilled and inspired by the art. It is a constant battle and we are our worst critics!
Downtime is so important to staying inspired and not burning out.
