We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Volpe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I was in the corporate world for several years and I decided to go back to school for my Master’s degree in Business. Working full time while attending graduate school was fun, exciting and exhausting and stressful. At this time, I was introduced to Reiki by my best friend who would often practice on me. I remember those sessions like it was yesterday. My friend was a single mom at the time. Her son was sleeping in his bedroom next door so the house was quiet and peaceful. She would take her table out and I would eagerly climb up and lay down. She would then practice Reiki and energy healing techniques while I relaxed and bathed in the beautiful energy. Sometimes I would drift off in my thoughts and other times I remained aware of the sensations in my body. I fell in love with the gently flow of energy and the lightness I felt after. I was hard to explain as the experience was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The magic of it, so to speak, I never questioned. I look back sometimes and think about how trusting I was and how I understood it on another level. This part wasn’t new to me and I had always been comfortable with the unseen. And so overtime, I was encouraged to study Reiki myself which then led me to teach. What began as a hobby eventually became my career. Listening to that place inside where spirit resides, I continued growing and healing myself personally, gained certification in different healing modalities and was blessed with opportunities to work or teach in different settings and facilitate healing for many individuals.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After practicing Reiki and energy healing for many years and while my children were young, I began to feel as though something was missing in my healing practice. Quite honestly, I felt as though I was only able to accompany my clients on their healing journey to a certain point and while I wanted to offer them more – I didn’t know what that “more” was. The work I was doing was beautiful and transformative but not enough for me on a deeper level. I felt the call to do more. I began researching and came across some videos of Tony Robbins through Robbins Madanes Training and it was a lightbulb moment! I knew coaching was it in terms of the next step for me. I didn’t make this decision to pursue formal training lightly. I took a mini-class, researched other programs, the field itself, watched tons of videos and kept coming back to Tony’s coaching program. It was the right fit for me.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Starting my coaching business was probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. Even though I had an MBA, business experience and a small client base, marketing yourself and your services is very different than it used to be. Creating a website, gathering leads, lead magnets, opt-ins, sales funnels, learning social media, getting out of my comfort zone to post pictures and videos – it’s not for the faint of heart or the introvert! However, despite the ups and downs and the steep learning curve, I realized that it’s okay to just be me. In other words, I don’t have to do what everyone else is doing online and on social. I don’t have to constantly “sell” myself. And I don’t have to work 24/7, And if someone appears to be doing what I’m doing, that’s ok too. We’re different people and our approach and practice is not the same so we will each attract the right clients for us. I don’t need to compare myself to anyone.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would definitely choose the same profession. However, I think that if I would have chosen a different undergraduate major I might have been working in my field sooner. Back in the day, I majored in Hospitality Management. And while I loved my business/marketing classes, I would probably choose now to major in psychology with a focus on educational or neuro-psychology.
