We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Sampson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jill , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As the proud owner of The Kitchen Sink Salon, our mission is deeply rooted in my personal journey and passion for empowering individuals through the transformative experience of self-care and confidence. Growing up, I always found solace and joy in the artistry of hair and beauty. It wasn’t just about aesthetics for me; it was about creating a space where people could embrace their unique beauty and feel a renewed sense of self.
I’ve experienced firsthand the profound impact that a visit to a salon can have on one’s confidence and outlook. Those moments in the stylist’s chair were not just about getting a haircut or a new style; they were about rediscovering my own strength and individuality.
I founded The Kitchen Sink Salon with the vision of creating a haven where every client can embark on their personal beauty journey. My mission goes beyond the surface level of hair; I believe that everyone deserves to feel beautiful and confident in their own skin, and I am dedicated to making that a reality for each person who walks through our doors.
To bring this mission to life, I prioritize not only top-notch technical skills but also a commitment to understanding each client’s unique needs and aspirations. From the moment you step into The Kitchen Sink Salon, you’re not just a customer; you’re a valued individual with a story waiting to be expressed. I am passionate about helping you discover and embrace your authentic self through personalized and attentive salon experiences.
In essence, The Kitchen Sink Salon is more than a salon—it’s a place where beauty meets empowerment, and where every individual can leave feeling not just beautiful, but confident and ready to conquer the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It’s taken me a long time to arrive to where I am today. Originally out of high school I wanted to be a hairstylist, however practicality & financial stability lead me to choosing an alternate path. Thus, my career journey began in the medical field where I earned a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Despite my pursuit in another career I was simultaneously fueling my passion. Over the years I was cutting friends and family’s hair, performed hair and makeup applications for weddings, graduations, photo shoots and more. Additionally, I began dabbling in photography and would occasionally make a day of it with a client while doing their hair, make up and then ended with a photo shoot. After working as Dr. Jill Sampson, PT for 7 years my heart lead me back to my roots, hair. The joy I felt while pampering other women and making them feel beautiful in their own skin is simply unmatched. Where joy and passion met, the Kitchen Sink Salon blossomed!
Being very family oriented myself, The Kitchen Sink Salon represents a place for women to call home. It’s a place to catch up with friends, unload your worries and build each other up. I’m honored to cultivate a unique establishment that facilitates growing beauty that can be seen both inward and outwardly.
Throughout the years as TKS has grown, we have reached beyond the typical salon that just does pretty hair and sends you out the door. We have also made education a priority that’s accessible to clients. Not only can clients come in for hair related services for cuts, color and extensions, but they can also come in for specific education sessions. Want to know how to better care for your hair? Are you struggling in curling your hair at home? Don’t know how to curl your hair at all? Okay, so you know you have curly hair, but don’t know how to style it? I GOT YOU! Let’s book an education session and go over anything you like during that session. During that time, you can practice, take notes, ask questions and leave with the confidence that you too can make your hair look salon day ready at home!
As far as products go, I primarily use Moroccan Oil. I feel as though it’s had the best expanse in their coverage for various types of hair. I personally use, recommend and sell their products in the salon and it still gets me excited to hear how much clients are enjoying their products at home.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I made a huge pivot in my life when I left a stable career in healthcare for the unknown in the beauty industry and entrepreneurship! I didn’t have any business experience, but I had confidence in my ability to do tough things. I was determined to make the change. And finally, I was committed to do whatever it took to accomplish what I had set out to do. I quit my full time job and worked on Mondays and 2 other evenings per week. I went to school full time: Tuesday – Saturday. I downsized everything I could in my life to minimize payments and live on bare minimums while in school. It was still a very rough road being single, having a house, car and previous bills to maintain. It was definitely scary to walk into, but I also knew that if God was calling me TO it, then He would get me THROUGH it! And He did!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media presence is a crucial part to any business. Before clients come to see you, they want to know what you can do, they want visual evidence of your work and they want to hear what others are saying about you. Using platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Google etc… have all aided in supporting my business and funneling clients to the salon. Also, another worthwhile mention is word of mouth! The more your clients love their experience, the more likely they are to share with others! This is paramount. Not only verbally with friends when they see them, but to those clients who are willing to rave about you online – they are the superstars that truly help businesses thrive! So, a HUGE THANK YOU to all my clients who have supported me in every way. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. I’m forever grateful and honored.
