We were lucky to catch up with Jill Pavlov Vazquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
Showing customers you appreciate them is, in my world, necessary. First off, because it’s true — I am so grateful for each and every one of my customers for trusting me with their precious content — it honestly means so much to me. But secondly is because those first customers or clients that your business receives are going to set the tone for everyone else — so make an impression that keeps your early adapters coming back and spreading the word about how awesome you are. It’s also a way to solidify your branding in their head — for example, this year for the holidays, I gifted my clients pens and notebooks (because I’m their writer) covered in rhinestones (because making words sparkle is part of my branding). The best part was seeing their reactions.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When it comes to my writing skills, I’m a Jill of all trades, if you will. By day, I write marketing copy — such as blogs, emails, and landing pages — for a variety of clients, and by night (or really whenever I find time), I’m a comedian — and those worlds cross paths all the time. I think my comedic background is the standout factor that separates my business from others – because I’m able to market myself in a genuinely enjoyable, sometimes laugh-inducing way. Clients love my work because they feel I’ve expressed their message in a way that conveys all their points, but still appeals to the reader’s emotions. I love working with brands that are risk takers and aren’t afraid to get a little edgy on social media.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
You can never underestimate the power of reliability, and I think my organized, diligent nature (which doesn’t always come naturally to creatives) is really what keeps a lot of clients not just coming back, but recommending me to others. That’s because I’m quick, efficient, and on top of things for the client. I keep communication open and let them know where I am with projects, as well as check in afterwards to see if they are satisfied. It seems simple, but people appreciate it more than you think!
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
When I first started my copywriting business, Your Creative Concierge, I didn’t have the funds to outsource branding myself, and being somewhat of a Canva whiz, I decided to do it myself. And I covered everything in sparkles, because I’ve always loved rhinestones, sequins and glitter. I initially got a lot of push back; some experts said my branding looked like a cosmetic company and others said it was too much — but that was also the point. Because my brand is extra asf! About 6 months in, I attended a week long business incubator and decided to really lean into the sparkle, incorporating it into my wardrobe daily – and it was a hit! I now use sparkles in all of my branding and clothing, and it has worked. Sometimes you have to trust your gut and really know who you are, and stick to it!
