We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Oelkers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
As business owners I think it’s natural and understandable to ask this question or wonder about this often. I can never leave work and just stop working, it’s 24/7 from answering texts to updating social media, to employee concerns and on and on. So sometimes I do think it would be nice to just let someone else be the boss and I just work my hours and leave work behind when I leave. When do I think about this most? On those Friday nights I’m supposed to close at 5 but I’m leaving at 7 because I fit an extra client in, or on a Sunday that is supposed to be my day off but here I am at work taking clients because I know they need me. When I’m home and juggling all the things that cannot be done when I’m at my clinic with clients. And when I know I need to record some reels for social media but I seriously hate it and don’t want to do it. So why do I keep doing it? Because I provide a unique approach to skincare that I know clients need and only I can give and if I were working for someone else I would be doing things their way and not mine. I know I’m needed and when my clients get the results they so desperately desire and they are happy, I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be. To see that self conscious client change into a self assured individual no longer hiding their face is such an amazing reward to what I do. I fix skin, so you can be proud of the skin you’re in. It’s just what I do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I entered the esthetics field due to my own struggles with my skin, specifically my acne. I had tried every solution, saw the derms, took the accutane and none of those things worked. I felt there had to be a better way to approach not only acne but skin concerns of all types. My goal when I started was to seek out the very best in advanced education and eventually that led me outside the US to obtain certifications for acne and corneotherapy, among many other classes I’ve taken from world leaders in the field. I also wanted to provide for my clients what I failed to find for myself, continued care and a true relationship between esthetician and client. Through both in-clinic treatments that are holistic yet results oriented and maintain the integrity and health of the skin, and at-home regimens, I work closely with my clients to solve their skin care issues and concerns. I’m invested in their results from the start. The products I use are of the highest level of integrity; they will not irritate or inflame the skin and are healthy for the skin, and my techniques and devices used are scientifically proven- not just the current trends on the market. As the largest organ in our body and the first line of defense against disease, healthy skin is not only important, but necessary.
There is a misconception out there that holistic means that it’s not very effective and just for relaxation and pampering. Although that can be the case and has it’s place and benefits, holistic does not automatically mean that it’s nothing but that. Holistic simply means whole body and my treatments and approach to skin care are some of the most advanced in our industry and focus on visible change and results. Often my results rival what you’d receive at a medspa, only the process avoids the damage a lot of their processes and treatments create to the skin. You don’t need to damage the skin to see results, you just have to have the knowledge to know how to do it differently then how it’s been traditionally done.
We provide at Butterfly Method Skincare, one hour and advanced facials, microcurrent and microneedling treatments, laser hair removal, waxing, tinting and lash lifts. We also provide remote consultations now as well.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Delivering the results for my clients that they were not getting elsewhere. By doing so I earned my clients loyalty and they have no qualms promoting me anytime anyone asks about help for their skin on those facebook neighborhood groups. My reputation has grown not only within the state but outside of it as well due to my clients.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before I got into the field of esthetics I was a stay at home mom, One day, my husband came home and asked for a divorce. My first thought was “how am I going to take care of myself? How am I going to pay my bills?” I had a college degree but it’s not the type of degree that leads to a specific job type and I hadn’t worked in 11 years. I decided to go back to school and get my esthetics licesensed. This has changed my life. Sometimes it takes some years under our belts to find what our true passion in life is. Esthetics is mine.
