We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Mullaney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
As with everything, weddings have changed dramatically since covid. And those changes drove trends. One of the biggest trends really isn’t a ‘trend’ at all — we are happy to see more and more couples choose to create a day that accurately reflects them as individuals and as a couple, instead of feeling the need to include certain aspects, or make certain decisions due to ‘tradition’. This has led to expanded entertainment offerings, more focus on ‘wow’ floral moments, and really a focus on creating an experience for the guests, personalized to the couple’s likes. Specifically in floral design, we see a steady resurgence of color, along with the use of loads of textural florals. We could not be more excited about this! Weddings are such a special celebration and they should be full of happiness. Adding color to florals is one way to accomplish this.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always had an eye for design — stemming from 4-H projects designing dresses with my mom at a young age. And, I actually originally majored in fashion design! But, I began missing the relationship I had with plants when growing up a farm kid in South Dakota & being VERY active in the FFA Floriculture program. So, I changed my major to horticulture & earned my BS from the University of Nebraska. GO BIG RED!
While in college, among other things, I studied floral design and always enjoyed it, though didn’t realize it could be a career path. Prior to starting Platinum Petals in 2015, I managed greenhouses in the botanic garden world for over a decade & even won a national award being named the Young Grower of the Year – so, you can say that my thumbs are VERY green!
I believe what sets Platinum Petals apart is my educational background. I truly understand the flowers and plants I am using (and can spell all the scientific names!). Knowing the flowers like I do gives a special attention to detail and deeper understanding of the product. I also pride myself on being really flexible, available, and helpful to my clients every step of the way. I often get compliments on being the quickest wedding vendor to respond!
I am truly proud of the growth Platinum Petals has taken over the past eight years. Being a transplant to Dallas without an extensive network of connections meant I had to WORK even harder to prove myself and create my little space in the Dallas market, which is no easy feat.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Being an introvert at heart, it was both scary and uncomfortable to put myself out there & make connections. But, along the way, I have met some like-minded wedding planners, who value my work, and continue to support me by sending their clients my way. Currently, most of my bookings come from these wonderful ladies, and I really think of it as a win-win. They know what level of work to expect from me, and I know their vetted client is an exact fit for the type of client I love to work for. As cheesy as it is, teamwork makes the dream work!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Platinum Petals has been one giant pivot! Once I graduated from college, I knew exactly what I planned to do with my life and exactly how I was going to get there. *don’t we all!* But, once I became immersed in the botanic garden world, I quickly realized that taking orders from someone else (no matter how many promotions I received) would not work for me. I needed to be in charge of my own destiny and working hours & hours of overtime just to make someone else look good was not how I planned to spend my life. Additionally, I craved a creative outlet.
Once I launched Platinum Petals, I knew entrepreneurship was the place for me and I haven’t looked back!
