We were lucky to catch up with Jill Carr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
First of all, I believe that each of us has our own version of success. So each of us needs to first define what that looks like for ourselves. Not what we think our mother-in-law wants us to do, not what our boss is telling us we should do, not for anyone else but what success looks and feels like for YOU. Is it X amount of money? Is it having a vacation home in Mexico? Is it freedom in your schedule? Is it being home with your kids?
Once you know that, you can make all your decisions and actions towards that goal.
For me, this has changed and looked differently over the last 4-5 years. From what started off as just a way to bring in some income to my family, has really turned into a passion and a deeper meaning. Not only do I believe so strongly in the power of podcasts and getting rural women’s voices out into the world, but the biggest impact my business has made is showing me what I’m truly capable of. Learning new skills, putting myself out there, leaning on community, doing the hard thing, getting out of my comfort zone, making decisions, pivoting, meeting a goal, celebrating wins, late nights, early mornings, and everything in between. Honestly, business ownership and motherhood have a lot of parallels! And having both in my life makes me feel so fulfilled.
So what do I think it takes to be successful? Always making decisions through the lens of your priorities, and acknowledging that your definition of success can change in different seasons of life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jill Carr and I’m wife to Isaac and mama to two little girls. We live and work on our ranch in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
I started my entrepreneurial journey back in 2019. We had our first daughter at the end of 2018 and at the time I was working in town at my 8-5 job. I loved it. I loved my coworkers. I got an amazing 12 week maternity leave. But then it was time to go back to work after maternity leave and I just really struggled to be away from our daughter for most of each day. I knew I needed to bring in some income to our family, so we explored several options and finally found the world of freelancing. I became a Virtual Assistant where I worked with several clients on various tasks and projects. Then in 2021, I helped one of my VA clients launch her podcast. And I was hooked.
I’ve always been a big time consumer of podcasts myself, especially living rurally where we have longer drives pretty much everywhere we go. So to then find out that I also loved the backend parts of making a podcast happen, it just felt meant to be! I still manage that client’s podcast to this day and I’m so thankful for her and that opportunity because it really sparked something in me.
Then in 2022 I was approached by another client to help with their podcast and the rest is history! I decided at that time to fully pivot and niche down into podcast management. Now Jill Carr Podcasting is a podcast production agency that helps rural women launch, manage, and grow their podcast to make powerful connections, share their expertise, and extend their reach to a larger audience.
I strongly believe in the power of podcasting and I am on a mission to amplify the voices of rural women. I love doing my small part behind the scenes to get these incredible women’s stories and missions out into the world.
I currently offer a podcast launch service which is a completely comprehensive package from vision to launch and beyond. We work closely together over the course of six weeks to prepare for your launch with strategy, assets, tools, workflows and one-on-one support.
I also offer ongoing monthly podcast management. From audio editing and show notes, to episode graphics, scheduling, and so much more, my team and I are here to help you get systems in place so that you can make a consistent impact on your audience and your business.
I love George Strait, chips and queso, taking walks, warm conversations, spending time with my friends and family, and of course, podcasts!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals! For me personally, the easiest way I will purchase something new, is when it’s been referred to me by someone I like and trust. So it’s been so helpful (for all parties involved) when one of my clients can wholeheartedly pass my name along to others.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think connection and relationship is everything. Being a rural woman myself, I’m able to connect with my clients (and potential clients) on that level.
I value honesty, integrity, accountability, relationships, strong communication, being reliable, and serving my clients to the best of my ability.
I believe my strategies, systems and processes provide excellent results and I am so proud of each one of my clients!
