Jie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
he idea for Postbot didn’t start in a lab or on a whiteboard.
It started in 2018, in my dad’s garage.
Back then, we were meeting with small business owners who connected with Chamber of Commerce for resources, like realtors, clinic managers, spa owners, contractors, just trying to understand their day-to-day pain points. We weren’t even thinking about AI yet. We just wanted to listen.
And we kept hearing the same thing, over and over again:
“We miss a lot of calls.”
“People don’t leave voicemails anymore.”
“I’m losing business and I can’t afford a full-time receptionist.”
That repetition was striking. We realized, this wasn’t a fluke.
It was a pattern.
We asked ourselves: Why is no one solving this?
In 2020, when voice AI finally reached a level where it sounded natural, we connected the dots. What if small businesses could have a receptionist that worked 24/7, never got sick, never missed a call, and cost less than a cup of coffee per day?
We weren’t trying to be futuristic. We were solving a painfully present problem.
And we knew it would work because we had already heard the demand—straight from the mouths of business owners years before. Postbot wasn’t built in a vacuum. It was built from five years of listening.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are both Software engineers by trade, my CTO, Jean Douchet has over 17 years of experience working with enterprise clients.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn everything I picked up in corporate America. In big companies, success often means staying in your lane, following the rules, and minimizing risk. But entrepreneurship is the opposite,it’s about breaking conventions, wearing multiple hats, and creating your own path where none exists.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We have bootstrapped Postbot since 2018. Alot came from savings and retirement accounts.
