We were lucky to catch up with Jiahn Kang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jiahn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As a visual artist, I must master how to express my creativity, but more importantly, that comes from a deep understanding of myself. Knowing who I am, what I stand for, and what I think is important are the fundamentals of my creations.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I came to the states around 2014 as hired as a Jewelry designer. I’ve worked in the fashion industry for a few years. I was deeply involved with seasonal colors and design elements that enhanced the style. I didn’t feel the company was safe financially and how they treated their employees. So I had to find my way and decided to work closely with my clients, using my color skills and decorative imagination on the cakes. At that time, I did take a class to master the essentials. People thought it was a significant shift from fashion jewelry to cake, but I thought once you master the basic skills, the rest is how you play with it. I worked for almost six years as a cake designer in NYC. And I’ve taught many students around the world. My work was featured in Vogue and other publishers. I had clients from high-end fashion brands to gourmet restaurants. Then there was a point I was feeling a bit burnt out and feeling a lack from deep inside me. I didn’t know what it was until later, after I moved to NC. I wanted to find “the thing” always inside me. And I think I have always wanted to be an artist. But I wasn’t brave enough to finish one piece of artwork.
After reading many books, I decided to pick up a brush and finish one painting. Just however the outcome, I was determined to finish one piece, and then it led to a whole collection.
I learned this when practicing my cake decorations. I must show up and do it every day until I get the flow. So that was my discipline, to show up in front of my canvas and paint. I already knew how to paint because I went to art school. But making art is a different story.
Making art is a visualization of your thoughts. I didn’t start my art business a long ago, But I am here painting for someone to create their inner garden. And this will bring joy to this person in their daily life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am an artist with a mission. I will connect with more people through my art business journey and share my mission. My mission is to help people connect to their authentic selves so that they can see their soul’s strength.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This is more about my commission works. When I create artwork for my clients, I hear their stories. It’s not just me making a colorful and lovely painting for their walls. It’s their story and their lives. I help them to take a moment and reconnect with themselves.
I listen to them carefully.
As a result, my paintings impact their daily lives, and it works as a reminder to take a moment and reconnect with themselves.
