We recently connected with Jia Caruso and have shared our conversation below.
Jia, appreciate you joining us today. Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
I work closely with OC Pom Rescue, and I regularly donate my goods and services to their efforts to rehabilitate and rehome Pomeranians. I love partnering with them, because they’re a woman-lead, foster-based rescue and I have a soft spot for animals. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to take my breaks with these cute little pups!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m a cake and dessert artist and I started my business during COVID. I specialize in chiffon style cakes with a creative and whimsical flair. When clients are looking for a one of a kind cake or dessert table spread they come to me and we work together to make their visions come true.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I am still struggling with is saying no. At the start of my creative journey, I took on projects that I knew I probably couldn’t execute particularly well. For example, I had a client request a vintage style cake and despite all of the time practicing piping, I just did not feel like I produced the best product for them. It’s taught me a valuable lesson in knowing what my creative limits are and what projects I know I can be proud of.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The look on my client’s face when they see the final product. It gets me every time. A lot of clients eventually become friends and I get to watch their families grow by creating fun desserts for their special life moments. Lots of birthdays, a few graduations, and maybe a wedding. It’s all very rewarding to see people being celebrated — it’s always been my favorite part.
