We recently connected with Jhaniyah Holland and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jhaniyah , thanks for joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
I would say my best and most efficient strategy when running my business is being transparent and relatable with my clients. I have never just wanted clients to come to me for the financial gain , I really want them to gain knowledge and actually see results and know why they are getting these results which is why I choose to take a holistic approach when providing services. Doing that has really turned some of my clients that were complete strangers into good friends. You have to know what you want and stand on that even when things are not going the way you want because having a business is not a straight road it gets very bumpy when I first became a esthetician business was GREAT but I was in a bad car wreck the first day of 2022 and it was like everything just stopped no matter how hard I tried to hang on . Having a business you have to have confidence especially being the age I am you have to own your purpose because if you don’t trust me everyone will know and try to use it as a personal gain. Learning to take unexpected circumstances and using it as a opportunity will help you move far with whatever path you take in life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I want to be honest I was doing good financially before starting my business but not mentally and someone asked me what was my exit plan and that had me really thinking what I wanted for myself. I went to school for nursing but my reason for that was I loved taking care of people it just did something to my soul when I was in the caregiving field seeing how patients felt and even their families when their loved one was took good care of. I knew I wasn’t really into the concept of nursing exactly but I was still into my purpose of it. I signed up for beauty school and had the mindset of lets just see where this goes and I will go from there. During that time I became professionally certified to do derma-planning and chemical peels. I also wanted to still have a connection with the medical field so Klashed Aesthetics also carries medical scrubs for sale and that is also a good work attire for any esthetician I feel like this is one of the things that sets me apart from all the other estheticians is that I have more to offer than just facial services. After I became licensed I did a Career Readiness Program with the non-profit SEEED Knox just to get some more continued education in all aspects and during that time I really worked on my networking, networking is so important with any kind of career path you take. I really got into mental health same as with my own business, what is going on inside of you that is causing break-outs on your face so my 9-5 and my business still kind of had a way of tying itself together. Outside of my business life I want to really become a advocate for the under served communities when it comes to mental health because just my generation alone needs it so badly and to do that I have to have confidence in my work and in my research. One of the things I am proud of is I became a board member for another organization that takes a very different approach into therapy.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to really unlearn is getting upset when things didn’t go how I planned it to. I’ve always been a over-achiever or at least felt like I needed to be. I had to realize that is not always right you have to have room to grow if you never fall you can’t continue to go up. I think a lot of that may come from my childhood trauma I don’t think I had the worst childhood I was took care of but it wasn’t always the best I still had those missing pieces you know. A lot of things came easy to me my high school year I graduated early but it was like when real life hit I had absolutely no idea what to do, I went to college, dropped out and then went to beauty school a year later to work on starting my own business. During that phase in life I really had to learn that I am not always right, everything does not have to be perfect. I feel like if I knew that while I was going through that a lot of things would have went differently
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I turned 18 two weeks later I was moving into my first apartment had just bought my first car and a freshman in college with 8 month baby. I’m willing to admit I wasn’t ready but I had to do what I had to do for us. We was 6 months in and my car was repossessed, I was getting evicted from my first apartment and in a abusive relationship. That was one of the darkest moments of my life so far and at the time I felt like I failed my child and lost my purpose to life. It took me 5 months to find a new home and when we did I promised myself I would never let myself get that low again or ever put us in position like that. A lot of people look up to me for my drive and ambition but what I tell them is I have no choice if I lose what I have now I may never have the opportunity again to thrive how I am thriving right now.
