We recently connected with Jeysson Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeysson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
The system in which we live offers us a professional perspective for which you must start training, you wish that you are a child and you are starting your learning processes. This does not mean that this system works properly. Taking into account that they do not cross a path of generic “training” that does not care about the specific tastes and abilities of the individual until an advanced age. It is worrying that the system does not worry about identifying, focusing, strengthening and promoting such skills and tastes from an early age, this is because perfection and excellence are achieved only with perseverance and discipline. Habits and virtues that are learned at an early age and that are effectively directed will result in a productive, creative and effective person in any field, more in the art world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In the middle of 2014, while I was finishing my undergraduate studies in graphic design, a friend from the university told me his intention to start with a tattoo course, to which he responded by asking that when he had the place he would let me know to do the course together and that’s how I began my process as a tattoo apprentice in classic tattoo supply in my country Colombia. In my process, my first tutor was Mr. Alexander Prada, who taught me the clearly basic aspects of the tattoo. After a short time in this tattoo shop my learning process ended and I had to continue on my own.
I started like many in this industry, tattooing in the living room of my house, only with the little I learned and using my logic and common sense. After a short time,
Fernando Rodriguez A.k.a Asylum, a tattoo artist I met when I was doing my course in Classic tattoo supply, gave me his friendship and his knowledge and contacts. With him I have traveled to different cities in my country in conventions, we have been in international conventions, he has introduced me to many of the people of the guild that I know, and he gave me the sponsorship of his magazine COVER UP MAGAZINE to be able to attend other tattoo conventions, where on two occasions I have obtained awards for my good performance (first place category new school in the SOACHA EXPOTATTOO 2019 and third place category new school in the ANIMAL TATTOO FEST 2019).
In July 2016, I opened my first tattoo shop to the public. Two years later I changed my tattoo shop to another better, larger location, a place specially created so that both artists and customers could enjoy an excellent environment to design, create and obtain spectacular pieces of art that allow my clients to reflect their feelings or experiences to others by means of ink on their skin.
Saiyajink, what is the name of my store, in 2022 it undergoes a restructuring and becomes a private studio, something more reserved and personal that allows a closer experience to my customers and users. The above given the possibility of taking my art to countries other than mine, such as in LA PAZ BOLIVIA, where in the company of my friend FERNANDO ASYLUM and his magazine COVER UP MAGAZINE 0 we participated in the 2nd ENCUENTRO DE ARTE CHUQUIAGO MARCA.
Now a new stage is on my way, stage in which I have received a special invitation to tattoo in the USA, in a great company called BLACK CLOUD TATTOO, an invitation for which I am only waiting for my work permits, because my new project is to take my art to as many countries as possible, to be able to leave a mark on the lives of many lovers of art, stories and tattooing.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The second time I came to the United States, I had a trip scheduled for October 10, 2022, this trip was scheduled to be able to visit the BLACK CLOUD TATTOO tattoo store located in Charlotte North Carolina.
3 days before my trip, I woke up a little sick, with stomach pain, dizziness and weakness. I thought then that I had 3 days to recover and be able to make my trip, but on the day of my trip, I was forced to travel, but to the hospital. I was hospitalized for 20 days for an anemia that almost killed me, after this I had to wait in my country for another month for some exams that due to the poor health system of the country, they never did them to me.
Due to my hospitalization I almost missed my opportunity to show my work in another country and start my new project, but I learned that when you work hard and consciously to achieve your goals, nothing, not even a hospitalization will take away what you deserve.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Many of us as artists take references to find our essence and our path, we see what other artists do, other brands, other stores and we try to take what works best for us to grow. The problem is that on many occasions we think that we should do exactly the same thing and we will have exactly the same results, but this is not true and is very harmful to our process, however, all processes are different, and each artist only shows a part of his process, that’s why we must take other processes as a reference but not as a strict script. It is necessary to know that each path is different, that all times are different and that what works for one may not work for another.
I can only say that we must believe in our process, we must have many references but always taking into account that I will live a unique process, so my goal is the same as that of another artist.
