Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever worked on is a song I wrote when I was 19 years old, still in college. This record is particularly special to me because I had the honor of featuring my maternal grandmother. Her powerful voice on such a healing track is something I’ll always cherish. The song’s central message and hook, “Amiro Kuch Inkono,” translates to “I want peace, do you?” in my maternal Ugandan tongue Acholi Luo.
Both of my parents were refugees, and my maternal grandparents fled the war in Uganda, seeking freedom in America. The song carries deep personal meaning and holds immense value for me. On the day of the recording, my grandmother, along with my brother and uncle, whom I had invited, were all there to witness the moment. It was one of those experiences that words can’t fully capture— you had to be there to feel it.
For me, it was a powerful realization of where my talent comes from. My grandmother, a natural on the mic, laid down an incredible freestyle in just one take. This project is one I know will live on, passed down from generation to generation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From a young age, I’ve had a clear vision for my life in music. Whether performing in talent shows, singing in the choir, or attending a performing arts school, I always knew this industry would be my path. After graduating high school, I dove straight into writing and recording music, viewing it as an investment in my passion—a passion I believed in deeply.
Years of dedication, creativity, and integrity in this industry have helped me become a seasoned songwriter, vocalist, and artist. I’ve built a substantial catalog of music and cultivated meaningful business relationships within the industry. Thanks to this experience, I can confidently write across a wide range of genres, fueling my creativity and presenting new challenges with each project.
This year, I’m excited to release fresh music to the world and continue to share my artistic journey. As a proud member of Creative Spaces Music Group in Los Angeles, I collaborate with an incredible team of talented and like-minded individuals who push me to grow.
In addition to my musical career, I also serve as the Executive Grants Director for Sharing Hope Medical Mission USA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing essential medical care and health education to underserved communities in Nigeria and beyond. This mission is a core part of my purpose, and I am committed to creating a lasting global impact through both my music and humanitarian work.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is deeply guided by God. There was a time when I was making incredible music but still felt lost, as though something was missing. It wasn’t until I discovered my true calling and began creating with purpose that I found alignment in both my life and career. Embracing this truth has brought me a sense of clarity and fulfillment I never imagined. For me, it is essential to remain steadfast in my integrity—both in my work and in my spirit—ensuring that every aspect of my career, business, and soul reflects my core values.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is connecting. I have the ability to invoke feeling and that is a power. My favorite quote is by Maya Angelou, “Words Are Things”, which is a powerful reflection on the impact that words can have on our lives. “….Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you.”
