We were lucky to catch up with Jevon Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jevon, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project to me, would have been my first EP “Chasing Failure”. Because it was my first time really putting something out to the world that would pretty much start how serious I was going to be moving forward. I had just moved back from Atlanta , and went back home in Michigan. Things didn’t work out in Atlanta, but I had started writing and recording while I was out there, so when I came back home, I recorded everything in my moms basement. One of my mentors I met in Atlanta engineered the whole ep. His name is Mac, he encouraged me during this time and really put the battery in my back. I wanted to show the world who I was and what they can expect from me in the future. That EP will always be special to me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jevon Alexander, and I am an artist and producer from Ypsilanti, MI. I started off as a producer first, I only became the artist because no one was using my beats. I had a few of influences in my area who were producers as well. I started making beats in middle school, just messing around in GarageBand. I met someone who goes by the name DAG, he took me under his wing and pretty much gave me the sauce when it comes to making beats. Over the years, I started to take the craft more seriously and really wanted to learn as much as I can. I would always freestyle over them so one day i figured I mines well record to them and put it out. I went to school for sound engineering but realized That wasn’t for me. I love music, but the creating part of it. People that know me, know that I’m a pretty laid back person, but I’m also fun to be around. As far as my brand, I’m a very clean cut type of artist. I tell it how it is and from my point view, but I’m also a nice guy, and that carries over in my music as well, especially the lady records. My biggest achievement for me is that my song “Mamba Mentality” made it on NBA 2k21 Next Gen. That was a dream come true, but also a no turning back moment for me. That song was on my latest Album “Balance”.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is, no matter how genuine I am, how talented I may feel, or how much a perfectionist I may be. Everyone isn’t going to like me. It’s not about what I might do wrong, so I’m really learning to block out the noise and stay true to myself. Not care about the results, because that will only lead to more disappointment, and disapproval.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission was always being able to do what you love, and make a living while doing it. But what added fuel to that fire, is that I recently lost my right hand man in a car accident. One of things we talked about and promised each other, is that we would chase our dreams, and we would die doing so, I plan on keeping my promise. He inspired me the most.
