We recently connected with Jett Pennington and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jett thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was a kid my dad used to take us to this costume shop. I used to try on the wigs. I had a vivid imagination as a child.
In highschool I was heavily involved in the theater, it was more broadway and music based but it opened the door to pursue it in a more tangible way. I have always loved the arts.
Jett, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been part of the Denver fashion and art community since 2016. Aside from doing theatrical hair/make up artist. I also create elaborate headpieces, set design, and unique costumery. I consider myself to be a creative director, a stylist, entertainer and a storyteller. I am also an avid yogi and currently going for my yoga teacher training license.. I believe in all things metaphysical including astrology. My strengths outside of art are music, cooking and anything outdoorsy. Kayaking, yoga and hiking. I am also a canvas painter, writer and I like to sing loud in my car.
This past year I graduated from Paul Mitchell school furthering my career as an esthetician. I am committed to the mental and physical wellness of others. I also participated in a few burlesque shows as an entertainer and got to be a professional mermaid at the Northglenn Pirate fest.
I hold several awards including Colorado People’s Choice Make up artist of the year award in 2019. Winner of Denver Unique Week of fashion Pump up the volume stylist competition in 2017, and 2021 Make up artist of the year by Colorado Fashion week, and Nativ Magazine. I was also nominated in 2022 by The Southwest hairstyling awards, making it into the finalists for the Avant Garde Hair category in the hair show at Denver Fashion Week. I have been lead MUA at many fashion events including DUWF, Redball, Scars, Siren etc. I have been published many times, and numerous times internationally.
I absolutely love what I do, I have this insatiable desire to create. My brand is Wicked Glamour. My accounts were recently hacked and I lost my Instagram at 11k followers. So while I feel like in a way I am kind of starting over. I also feel like ive been given this blank canvas as an artist to decide who I am all over again. Growth in the lessons is what I am taking from this.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission in life is to create beauty and to cultivate happiness in the world with either my artwork, or the wellness side of my career. I love helping people feel beautiful, loved and cared for by either artistic transformation, or the healing touch of esthetics, facial massage, skin care or spiritual yoga instruction. Ive always felt at home in the service of others. Another goal is connectivity, there is nothing like working collaboratively with other talented creatives. I love the feeling of being united by art. It is truly so rewarding. Basically just to be a traveling beauty witch. Making people happy and well with my magic.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I do think sometimes people can look at what I do and see alot of fluff. While it isn’t the most practical of lifestyles, I do believe it is needed in the world. When people are down and depressed it is art, music and beauty that they turn too, to feel love. When the economy is not doing well, art is the first thing that gets dropped from the budget. Its the whip cream… alot of people see it as a luxury. Hence the term starving artist. I do wish society as a whole could understand how hard it is for us to put ourselves out there and create. But we do it because we love the world.
