We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesze Pillay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesze below.
Jesze, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Loaded question…
taking a risk seems to be my preferred way of life.
No risk, no reward they say, this rings true when I look back a few years ago and how my work life has transformed due to the risks I decided to take along the way.
An interior designer spends most of her time on site or busy drawing up incredible spaces … always busy with clients and work… depending on work coming in and always looking for the next best project to hit your table. Little did I realize the upcoming risk would be my future projects.
Covid the worldwide pandemic arrives and here I am, looking to find a small holding to house our interior design team and our small manufacturing bespoke furniture company. I come across an incredible home in Bothas hill Valley of 1000 hills.
Taken away by the views and captured by the energy of the broken down home I decide to invest at the start of a world wide pandemic. Little did I know that this risk was going to take me on a journey… one that I’m still on and the greatest reward.
Only days later after moving out of our previous rental factory they were shut down during Covid which would have been the end of our business had we remained in that space. Soon South Africa, Durban suffered at the hands of looting and the factory that we had left was burnt down…
The risk we had taken by investing in a space that called to us during a pandemic had saved our business in so many ways.
Jb designs has endured the worst and is constantly adapting and evolving. We have grown and been grounded in a new home decorated with goats frequenting our backyard and a view to die for.
Ever heard the saying “adapt or perish”?
This rings true when I think of the many pitfalls that we were saved from and the gems that await us.
We have since started a new project as a small team building on the land our first boutique bed & breakfast which we are busy completing whilst drawing up a plot and plan to future develop the landscape.
This risk was well worth the RISK
