We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesus Flores. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesus below.
Alright, Jesus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Taking risks is the best way to learn. In everything I do I have had to take a risk to learn more. Truly the best way to learn is to fail at doing something you have never done. In that way you see what you did wrong and the next time you try again you improve. Like in painting you learn what painting techniques you can and can’t use or in photography what lenses are the best for certain shots or subjects. So make sure to go out there and make some mistakes!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
To be honest i just couldn’t stand still. I always had a knack for everything so I just went and did it all. Not to say a was any good at first but over time i did get the chance to hone my skills. You can see in everything i do there is a huge change in it over time. Everything from my art to may photography and even my magic. You can really see how it all changes on my social media. On my social media I go by @nexxus130. There you can see the art I post and how it changes all the time. Also my photography which changes from subject to subject and year to year.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One big thing is subject matter. Not everyone is the same in everything. That is one thing everyone needs to understand. Abstract art is way different from portraits but just because you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t art. Not everyone wants to take pictures of people, some rather do products and have a unique eye for that. Heck even in magic just look and the two top magicians Criss Angel and David Blaine. Those two couldn’t be worlds apart yet some people will say one isn’t a magician or one doesn’t do real magic but either way they are magicians.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The number one book that has really helped me is one that my wife bought me called The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck. It teaches you that one should try and find meaning through what they find to be important in life and to only put time and energy into thing that they can control. For example, popularity is not something you can control and no matter what you do some people won’t like you for the same reasons some people do like you and the other way around. So why stress over being popular when it only makes you become a lesser version of you for approval who may not even stick around for the long run. This I feel works on multiple levels in life and what you do whether its a product your making, art you made, a photo you took, or a song you wrote, it all can be applied the same way.
