We recently connected with Jesus Carrillo and have shared our conversation below.
Jesus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
A lot of people tend to put too much importance on their happiness or how they are feeling. I think there’s nothing wrong with being aware of how you are feeling, but I don’t think you should let it dictate what you do with your life. I place more importance on whether I’m being productive and working towards my goals.
I’ve had “regular” jobs before and I think they were great at teaching me what it’s like to be on the “other end of the stick”. It’s good to have experience as both the boss and the employee (I prefer being the boss haha).
I don’t have this thought often, but when I do, I am grateful for the position I’m at in life and consider myself blessed to get to do something that I truly enjoy everyday.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the landscape construction industry while attending community college. I did it as a summer job and part-time while I went to school. I always knew that I wanted to start my own business ever since I was young.
I would have side hustles such as reselling sneakers, clothes, and car detailing while I had this job.
After learning as much as I could working on the field I decided it was time to get serious about business and co-founded “Pantera Landscapes” with my business partner.
Our company builds beautiful outdoor living spaces. We install pavers, outdoor kitchens, firepits, artificial turf, plants, irrigation, and more. More importantly we build spaces for families to make memories for decades to come.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
People skills are valuable, not only for business, but for life in general. One of my favorite reads is “How To Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. I give this book a read at least once a year. It opens your eyes to other people’s perspective and how important it is to look at a situation from other angles.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the business world you have to be prepared to face anything and everything. Everyday comes with a set of new challenges and you have to be prepared to face them and not be scared of the potential outcomes.
After awhile you get so used to “slaying dragons” that you don’t put much significance to them. Stressful situations that I deal with from time to time include dealing with project managing failures that are out of your hands, trucks breaking down, and losing money on a job. In the grand scheme of things these are all learning opportunities and only serve as steps to get better at what you do.
