We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessyca Canal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessyca, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Many want to be successful but not many are doing what it takes to reach success. I get called “lucky” by many people including those close to me and it truly does not sit well with me. No one is there with me through the long nights and days seeing the effort it takes to own a business. It is my 7th year running EBJ Events and just last week I had to do an 85 hour work week not to mention I have a 18 month old twins and a husband and dog. No one is there to see the late nights, the blood, sweat and tears it takes but everyone is there to call you ” lucky”. What it takes to be successful is having a mentality I call, “swim or swim” I discuss this in my podcast, Boss, Babies & Bottles aka B3. It is the mentality that has you saying that no matter what you will prevail. There is no other choice, and when you truly believe that and work every day like if no matter what this is going to work, then your hard work and dedication make it happen. I like to say the universe also helps to conspire with me but that might lead people to think that it did not take work to begin with! Nothing in life is easy and the easy is not worth it. You have to work hard but also work smart, becoming an expert so it does not take you as long as it did at the beginning and then so you can then use your time for other very important pieces. For example, for me that is the correct social media marketing, branding, staffing and bridal events that we put on. It is finding a way to replicate yourself so then you can do more and continue building to create more branches to your success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Jessyca, I am a 10-year marketing and economics specialist turned wedding planner, podcaster, wife and mom of 18-month old twins. I have helped many couples realize their wedding dreams and have helped them create countless memories that will last a lifetime. After years of experience in planning events for the Corporate World, I have taken my skills in timeline management, design work and my eye for detail to bring together a team of individuals who are committed to delivering excellence no matter how grand or intimate the occasion.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Although I am not where I want to be, I have had social media as the forefront of my business and we interact with it DAILY. We post on our story everyday and out feed as well. We engage in commenting on photos and messaging brides! At first the growth was slow but little by little it has now reached a point where it is growing and gaining new followers everyday. The most important part is showing up daily and being consistent. The rest comes with time so have some patience!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For sure it will always be word of mouth! My industry is also a little odd in the sense where sometimes it is not necessarily my couple telling someone about me but also their reviews. I make sure all my couples review us in as many of the places we show up as possible and our reviews literally can speak for themselves!
