We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessika Hicks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessika below.
Alright, Jessika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Anyone will say to become successful takes determination and skills. Although that is true, I believe passion and patience are also very important. Personally, I have a passion for my craft and strive to learn more and better my techniques. As hard as it is to continue to have patience some days, it is important to keep in mind as it helps define my goals and when those goals are reached, no matter how small. That is when I feel successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I offer photography for any occasion. But I specialize in portraits for high school seniors, couples, and weddings. It all started as a hobby when I was a child. And it’s almost been 10 years since someone offered to pay for me to be their photographer. I’m very proud of my business’s growth in the past 4 years. I never thought I could start a business on my own let alone offer a service that I love doing. What sets me apart from other photography businesses is that I truly try to get to know my clients and hear about their love stories to personalize their experience with myself and my team.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
In 2019, my business was my side hustle. At first, going full-time was just a fantasy. I had a goal to quit my 9-5 job by the end of the year. As my clientele and business grew, I realized I couldn’t stretch any further nor handle the stress of my 9-5 which I did not have a desire to be there any longer. So, I dove straight into making my side hustle my full-time. It was definitely scary and unexpected until the days leading up to leaving my 9-5. And I never looked back, it has been such an incredible journey since and I am very grateful I made that decision.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The absolute, without a doubt most rewarding aspect, is hearing how much my clients love their photos. The emails they send to me letting me know they were so in love with their photos and are crying happy tears is such a great feeling. It is also rewarding to know that photos I’ve taken are hung up in homes that will be looked upon for years to come.
