Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessie Spartano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jessie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
There’s a reason I put “inspirational” in front the of word rapper when I describe who I am. Rap has turned into, let’s just say, a unique genre, and I fight very hard to set myself apart from any (female) rapper in the game. Quick! In the next 5 seconds think of a female rapper that is positive, doesn’t cuss and keeps most of her body covered. Can’t think of any? Me neither. That’s where I come in. My music is straight to the point where I discuss real life issues that many songs neglect to talk about today. It’s hits after hits of raunchy lyrics with quick dance moves that anyone of any age can memorize. I however like to talk about real life situations that need to be addressed and do so with integrity. Remember, kids are listening.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started performing at a young age. It started with figure skating, then gymnastics, dance, theatre and then… I discovered musical theatre. Music AND acting?? Sold! I worked really hard for many years to build my resume and that ultimately led me the opportunity to The University of Southern California. Here I studied Theatre and Music Industry. I continued working on my creative skills while studying the music industry and what it takes to be in it and what it takes to fail. When I graduated I met a director who cast me in his movie. One day on set we got to talking about music and it turns out we both wrote rap music (I’ve been writing rap music since I was a little girl). He invited me into the studio the following week and the moment I put those headphones on was the moment I quit acting and picked up the mic for good. My music speaks for itself so take a listen and see how different I am.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Don’t care about what others think. My producer taught me to make music with my head down. Do we like the track? Yes. Would my parents be proud? Yes. Then that’s all that matters. With success comes more negativity. Let it rain because that’s where the sun will shine again.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ll be honest, social media takes so much work that sometimes I wish it didn’t exist haha. With that said, I reply to ALL of the comments and always respond to my fans who DM me. This takes time but I’m not willing to post anything without committing to these two things. There might be a day I’m way too busy to respond but until that day comes I’m committed!
