Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessie Poole. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jessie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
When I decided I wanted to open my own CoolSculpting business, I needed to purchase the equipment… which isn’t cheap. Each device costs about as much as a house.
I was talking to my uncle about my goals and where I wanted to go in life. I had a binder with my business plan in it – projections and a marketing plan – and he went and got his checkbook and wrote a check to cover the cost of the equipment I would need. That was the craziest moment of my life.
He didn’t even open the binder before he wrote the check. He didn’t blink or bat an eye. He just said, “if you’re doing it, I’m all in.”
I remember us talking that night & him telling me that it didn’t matter what the business was, that he would bank on me everyday.
I had never had someone believe in me like that as a kid, or even as an adult. He helped shape so much of my confidence in that moment, when I was feeling so unsure of myself. I wasn’t sure I could actually make the jump but here this man was… a man I admired and respected. A man who was an an entrepreneur himself. Who had a family and balanced work and life and was always the life of the party amidst building wealth to support his family too.
He didn’t have to do that for me. He didn’t need to. There were smarter and safer places to put his money by all accounts. But that act of kindness changed my life. Those words changed my life.
I wouldn’t be who I am today without that moment. I do not take for granted how blessed I am to have him in my life and in my business as our only investor.
It’s honestly one of the things I’m most proud of… every year, I get to write him a check for distributions based on profits. And every year, he beams and says he wasn’t ever expecting any of that money back.
He keeps his certificate of shares framed on his desk and it makes me so happy knowing that he’s that proud of me. That’s a thing all of us need… someone like that in our corner to root for our successes and help us swing for the fences.
I hope I can pass along that kindness to someone else. Maybe be that type of support to his kids, or to the next generation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into aesthetics after college by working for a cosmetic surgery practice. I then worked in medical device sales for a few years as a CoolSculpting rep.
I loved the industry and saw so much potential. My husband and I would day dream about what it might look like to open our own CoolSculpting business.
Then we opened the doors of Element Body Lab – the first, best, and only CoolSculpting dedicated business in Dallas.
The first 2 years, I was the only provider. I got started by renting an office inside of another plastic surgery practice until I could afford to build out a full location. Now, we have a team who supports the business and a 2 room facility of our own.
The business started as this little pop up with no signage… and now we’re the premier practice for anyone looking to freeze their fat.
For someone unfamiliar with CoolSculpting – it’s a fat freezing procedure that’s kind of like a nonsurgical alternative to lipo. It works by freezing pockets of pinchable fat between the chin and knees and tricking your body into metabolizing it. It’s FDA cleared in 9 areas, so you can customize the treatment to your goals and get rid of stubborn fat that’s not responding to diet or exercise.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
What a lot of people don’t know is that during my first year in business, I had an investigation with the medical board from a competitor who tried to get me to shut down.
It was incredibly stressful. Almost a full year passed with having to basically prove I wasn’t breaking any laws by being in business. Being a natural people pleasure, it was so difficult feeling like I was in trouble for basically a full year:
Then my 2nd year in business, COVID happened. So I had to pivot and be so dang scrappy to make it as a young entrepreneur to survive those 2 years and come out the other side both sane and successful.
I couldn’t have done it without my family, god love them. They loved me at my absolute most anxious.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I use Instagram a lot in our business and actually have a course and podcast for other CoolScupting providers training on the topics.
I realized that no one in our niche was leveraging social or REALLY good on camera, so I decided to just try.
I started going live on Instagram every week at the same time. It started as a way for me to improve my own camera skills. But it ended up being a really smart marketing tactic.
I got better on camera, but I also consistently produced content that attracted more customers.
That content could also be repurposed. So I embedded the videos on our website. Then it was more powerful than just regular social posts.
Now, it’s insane…. About 80% of our sales are impacted by our Instagram and we don’t pay for ads.
If anyone is in business, I’d recommend leveraging the tools on social. Becoming active on social is a great way to attract more customers but also a great way to improve on your own skills, talk tracks, product knowledge, customer service… and the list goes on.
My advice would be to be ok sucking for a while before you get better. No one starts off being really good. It’s a skill. Think of it like a sport. No one starts off shooting like Kobe.
