We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessie Hamby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessie below.
Jessie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I think as a business owner I have a meltdown every few months and wonder what it would be like to have a “regular job” or punch a time clock. Entrepreneurship is an emotional rollercoaster ride with its ups and downs. There’s so much that has to be done behind the scenes daily to keep everything running smoothly and allowing me to focus on perfecting my actual craft.
There’s 2 memes that stick out in my mind when someone asks about being a business owner/entrepreneur. 1 is a an iceberg with the surface above water being something small and minuscule and the part that’s underwater is 10x the size of the surface. In so many ways this is what it looks like to run a business. People see the success of the business which is a tiny part that shows above the surface but the real mass is what lies under the surface. The second is the line graph with with high points labeled with things like “success”, “i’m killing this business thing”, etc and the low points labeled as “i give up”, “failing”, etc. This is very relevant to the emotions of a business owner.
In a nutshell, I traded hardwork, long hours, and being on someone else’s timeclock and timeline for hardwork, even longer hours, my own timeline but ultimately my own control and flexibility. Although it’s hard and often incredibly challenging the reward is far worth it!

Jessie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jessie Hamby and I am a beauty professional with 10years under my belt. I had wanted to go to school for cosmetology in high school but wasn’t able to until several years and life happenings later. When I had the opportunity, I took it and it was the best decision I could’ve made, I knew instantly I was where I was supposed to be. In the past 10yrs I have been able to explore so many amazing aspects of the industry from the retail side to educating, to working in the salon, on film and editorial sets, fashion shows and bridal work. The thing I love most is being able to connect with and transform my clients both externally and internally. My goal is to create a warm space where you feel at home to be your most authentic self, a place without judgment and that will challenge even your own limiting beliefs.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a free tool for advertising and essential to your business. I built my network on social by being authentic. I don’t shy away from certain subjects and beliefs that are near and dear to me. I believe that readers and your audience will connect best with what they can relate to. Your brand is an extension of you and should reflect that.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of Mouth! Building your business reputation is important and you never know who you are going to come in contact with. A mentor once told me, you’re always interviewing. This has held true in my 10yrs of business. I’ve met people that were never my clients but that I made an impression on that have sent me business.
