We caught up with the brilliant and insightful JESSIE BONNE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
JESSIE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful stories in my life happened one day when I received a call from Alysha, a friend and salesperson at the Four Seasons Surf Club store in Miami. She told me that there was a customer in the store who had fallen in love with the Kult pieces being sold there and wanted to meet me. This call came on a thursday, and that same day Alysha put me in touch with a stranger.
To be honest, I had doubts at first. However, I decided to go on a blind date, to meet at a restaurant and talk. That’s how I met Charles. My expectations at that moment were very low, but from the beginning the conversation started flowing in a unique way and I quickly felt like I was in front of a person who I now consider an angel.
Our first meeting lasted only 40 minutes. Charles was with a friend. And from the beginning, I could see the genuineness of his desire to meet me because he loved the Kult pieces. We had an excellent conversation, where in addition to appreciating my work, he told me his beautiful life story in DC, where with his partner, they decided to adopt two Afro-descendant brothers, and years later, they adopted two sisters of the first two. So, for me, a Caribbean, Afro-descendant woman, the whole story had a special meaning, where the custom anniversary rings he later commissioned for him and his partner, I could design with a special purpose, the same purpose that led us to connect in a unique way from the moment we met. Those rings were to celebrate love in tis broader sense, since they got married the same day taht they officially adopted their amazing 4 children.
After the meeting, I got into my car to drive back home, and it was at that moment that I started crying tears of happiness for having met such a special person, with whom we connected perfectly and who fell in love with the work I do. This experience served to reaffirm my conviction about the need for a purpose behind every activity we do. If that sense doesn’t exist, our lives are empty, and when we find people with whom we can share a purpose, we can connect in a unique way. For this reason, today at Kult, we work to identify people’s purposes, which then give meaning to a piece and their lives.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My love for jewelry began during my childhood. At that time, I greatly admired the elegance of my mother with the different pieces she wore. However, for many years, my life was focused on communication, as a branding consultant, collaborating with two of the world’s largest agencies, both in Paris and Mexico City, working closely with major brands on their positioning strategies, brand personality, and finding their purposes to connect with audiences.
These elements are what are present in Kult today, my own jewelry brand, which focuses on designing pieces with purpose and meaning for those who wear them. But the origin of Kult dates back to a coincidence, as during my life in Mexico, where I lived for 8 years, I decided to make my own jewelry. This was based on personal inspiration. However, people around me quickly fell in love with the pieces and urged me to create a brand and company, which today is focused on designing exclusive, fine jewelry pieces, combining gold, with precious and semi-precious stones. But most importantly, with a meaning behind them that makes them unique.
Many may say that Kult makes jewelry. I define Kult as a medium to connect people with their essence, through beautiful reminders of who they are and what matters to them. The world is experiencing times of change and adaptation today. The acceleration of communications, along with the lack of credibility of information, leads us today to distrust and stress, feelings that are amplified within a multipolar context in which we live. These elements generate uncertainty and confusion, where in trying to solve day-to-day issues, we forget about our ultimate purposes in life, which truly give meaning to our existence. For this reason, Kult has found in jewelry a point on which to focus energies and give meaning to a piece to always remind us of the path we should or want to follow, all this to build more harmonious lives and a better world.
In addition to the purpose behind each of Kult’s pieces, people can see clear sources of inspiration in them. In this sense, I am a lover of architecture, which is why I seek to work with geometric and balanced lines that show simplicity and harmony within the complexity of jewelry. This is because often it is the simple and straightforward things that bring us happiness and meaning in a world of complexities. Likewise, I am convinced that elegance lies in simplicity, and fortunately, I find more and more people who see this trend as a construction of personality.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is just beautiful to connect with people through your creative practice. Just the fact that strangers can feel your intention and appreciate your essence without knowing you, or even talk to you most of the time. I highly value the opportunity to connect in such a meaningful and genuine way.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There is nothing I feel I had to unlearn. I rather focus on things that I have learnt. For example, I have learnt that as a niche brand, you have to stay true to who you are and honor your vision, no matter what the trends are. It takes some courage, and sometimes it might be frustrating because it also takes more time to reach commercial success. But I can see that many people are tired of standardization and look for unique proposals. There is a customer for each and everyone of us, as long as we keep our essence.
