We recently connected with Jessica Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think first you have to define the word “successful” first. Being successful means different things for different people. I believe if you determine success based on a number you’ll never reach the success you are looking for.
Success to me means making connections with people. I enjoy waking up in the morning and enjoy what I do for a living. I don’t think about the numbers because that will always change as your business grows.
I believe gratitude is the blueprint for success. Waking up in the morning and being thankful for this day is important. Once you give gratitude to all that you have any and everything else is a bonus.
Hard work, making a schedule, etc. is a given. But in order to be successful you have to be grateful for what you already have. Once you’ve done that know that every thing from that point is a bonus. Also, knowing when to let go of what no longer serves you is important. Loyalty does not determine someone’s place in your life. Yes, loyalty is important and we all seek it, however, sometimes trying to stay loyal or keeping someone around because of their loyalty will only hold you back. Now, this doesn’t mean to burn bridges with people who support you, this mean knowing that when you’ve reached a level in you circle that is no longer bringing you knowledge or serves you in your purpose it is ok to move to the next level. Sometimes when you move to the next level those who have been loyal can not come. But again, that doesn’t mean to just move on and ditch those people, it just means that they level of access they have to you may lessen due to the tables you will now be sitting.
Success can mean 250k a year with 2 weeks vacation, no weekends, and stability. Success doesn’t have to be becoming a millionaire. Success to me is having gratitude first, then accomplishing the little goals you make whether it be for the day the week or the year.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the massage industry for almost 15 years now. I started as a little girl wanting to follow in my grandmother’s footstep and heal people through massage. I was living in Auburn, AL at the time and a friend of mine told me I needed to enroll in massage school. I had thought about it before but didn’t go to massage school and chose to go to a university. Once I moved back to Texas I enrolled into massage school and started my career once I passed my state board exam
I have been in business for myself goin on 4 years. I focus on injury recovery and athletic performance, but also provide prenatal and therapeutic massages.
I enjoy working with clients who use massage as a therapy rather than a service. My clients include professional athletes, television personalities, celebrity stylists, artists, lawyers and more. I use different techniques to help with Range of Motion, aches and pains, headaches, tension and more.
I customize each session for my clients, whether it is their first time or they see me every week. I believe this sets me apart for others in my field because its more than just a technique for me. Sometimes they just need someone to listen to them, or to give them some friendly advice. I am not a psychiatrist or a doctor but I’ve learned that stress causes so many issues in y0ur body. Emotional distress causes stress, I like to provide an experience for my clients to feel comfortable and safe so they can relax and release some stress.
I am most proud of myself. I’ve worked very hard with little to no help for anyone to grow my business. I started as a mobile massage business traveling all over the city to grow my clientele wearing all the hats, to now having a location, an awesome assistant (Jacoba) and a second therapist (Clint) to help grow my company.
The thing I want people to know abo0ut my brand is we are here to provide you with service that is unmatched. We believe in helping and healing. Majestic therapy is more than a massage company, we care about you and want to provide you with the best service we can give.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Oh where do I start, I’ve had so many.
Before I started Majestic Therapy there was a long list of events that happened, looking back on it now I couldn’t have gotten through any of it without resilience.
In 2017 a series of events snowballed. Hurricane Harvey hit Texas with a vengeance. My family (my husband, son and myself) were devastated. We lost our home and everything we owned. We were only able to save our two vehicles and some clothes. For the next 8 months I would have to live in and out of a hotel room. While we were trying to get out life back on track my husband and I had to make a tough decision and send our son to live with my father until we could get things together. A few months after my son went to stay with my dad, my husband got a job out of town. I was now all alone. I am not originally from Houston, so I didn’t have any family close by to turn to.
In the midst of recovering from the hurricane I started to lose people for various reasons. It started in December ’17 my husband’s aunt passed away suddenly. Little did I know this was the first of many Losses I would experience in a short amount of time. It seemed like every 3 weeks I was getting news that someone I knew was passing away. I lost friends to overdoses, I lost a client to murder, I lost an uncle to liver disease, and the worst one for me was losing my grandmother to cancer.
At the end of 2018 I decided to start my business. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I had no knowledge of where to begin. I didn’t know anyone who I could go to for advice or even what I would need to get started. I decided I am stronger than what has happened to me and I knew God had a bigger plan for my life. I wasn’t going to let my circumstances dictate my path. So I started Majestic Therapy as a mobile massage business Now in 2022 I have been in business for 3.5 years and opened my location in October ’21. It is flourishing and I continue to work hard to grow every year.
If that isn’t resilience I don’t know what is!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think being genuine and my authentic self is what has helped me build my reputation. I don’t pretend to be something or someone I’m not. I am an honest, generous and a fun person. I carry that with me everywhere I go. I don’t like to take everything so serious because life is already hard on us as it is, I believe doing nice things for people is second nature to me. Everyone I meet, I try to pay attention to them.
I am a huge gift giver, I like to surprise clients for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. It doesn’t have to be an extreme gift but I know that a small gesture can make anyone feel important and cared about.
I also try to help out by giving back. I have clients who have started their own businesses or organization and I love to show my support. I also like to mentor young men and women. I give them a perspective that helps them understand things in a different point of view.
You can never go wrong with being yourself, some people will like it some people won’t, but regardless you can never go wrong with being just who you are.
