We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Woodring. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always dreamed of a life where I could be at home with my family enjoying the things I love while providing for my family’s needs. When I was 16 years old I started cosmetology school & became a licensed Cosmetologist before even graduating high school. I knew from a young age that I wanted a flexible job where I could express my creativity. I’ve been truly grateful for the opportunity to spend time at work connecting with clients & getting lost in the meditation of the art.
During my 18 years as an independent cosmetologist I started making jewelry in my free time, something I have loved doing since I was a kid. Some days I would make more jewelry than I knew what to do with. I would wear my pieces around town or to work & clients would buy my jewelry right off of me. This is when I knew it could be something more than just a hobby.
Having a business background in the creative industry I’ve been able to use my experience and apply that to turning my hobby into a jewelry design business. Since I was 18 years old I have had the opportunity to own & run a creative client based business; using my passion to make my clients dream come to life. While at times there have been challenges & a lot of learning along the way I would still choose this path again and again.
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have a variety of high quality, handmade items from earrings to necklaces, bracelets & anklets; but a few of my favorite pieces I’ve been focusing on lately are from the “I Am” & “My Tribe” Collection. These pieces are made with beautiful, raw stones & silky 24k gold chain; also available in silver. The “I Am” Birthstone collection pieces are made with birthstones representing each month & come with a unique affirmation card based on the month & stone. My January Girl affirmation card reads, “I Am confident, driven & wise”.
The “My Tribe” Collection is custom designed pieces with birthstones to represent each of your loved ones in your tribe. Every piece from this line come with cards telling the name of each stone & what it signifies. Some of the most rewarding feedback I’ve received is from clients who wear pieces from the My Tribe Collection.
All of my items are gift ready. Each comes with its own gift box and travel pouch. So whether you’re gifting a friend or loved one, or simply want to treat yourself with a unique and special item, these are some that you can surely hold near to your heart.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Aside from spending quiet time enjoying my hobby & calling it work, the most rewarding part of what I do is the feedback I’ve received from clients. Pieces from the My Tribe collection have provided a talking point for families to connect. As they spend time together talking about each birthstone, who it represents, & the meaning that each stone brings. I’ve been told it’s like carrying a little piece of home with you.
Time passes quickly, family grows and age sneaks up on us. For my 60th birthday I received a My Tribe gemstone bracelet from Woodring Designs. The bracelet includes 15 stones of various sizes, representing three generations and is grouped by our four distinct families. I really didn’t expect how many people would ask me about it. Most importantly, I didn’t expect our grandchildren (seven under seven!) to sit next to me and listen as I carefully go through each family, each stone and who it represents. I love how quickly they have learned which stone is theirs as I move from stone to stone. The bracelet itself is amazing… the unexpected time with our Grandchildren is something I will cherish forever.

I have purchased many pieces of Jessica’s jewelry for myself and as gifts over the past few years. Beautiful pieces all! But my favorite piece that I wear daily is my “My Tribe” bracelet. Adults comment on its uniqueness then marvel when I tell them it represents our entire family. I especially love when our grandchildren sit on my lap and name each person’s bead and their connection to the family as a whole. A truly special heirloom.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Having a creative outlet while connecting with others has always been an important part of what I love. I have been able to connect to clients by working on custom orders with them. I especially love learning about each family member and where they fit into the family tree as I add their stone to my custom My Tribe pieces.
In your view, What can society do to best support artist, creatives, & a thriving creative ecosystem?
If you love an artist’s designs and/or what they stand for, spread the word. This helps small business’ in such a huge way. Only with the support of our community can we thrive.
Also, if you have a passion or talent of your own share it! The world can benefit from what everyone has to offer.
