We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Winters a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
For my business, we quantify success by creative excellence, attention to the details, a happy team, and profitability. It is solidified by satisfaction in a high quality, finished product. To achieve this success, we offer products that are both durable and beautiful, providing a range of options to suit varied budgets and needs. Not only do we offer these quality products, but we marry them with integrity. At Kitchen Tune-Up, we take pride in being honorable in the remodeling industry that often lacks this, so even if we make a mistake, we will be sure to make it right in the end.
I developed this view by keeping the verse, “whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them”. When I am in the position of customer, I hope that those I have hired will provide me with a good product that they stand behind.
With this approach, my husband and I have found financial success and satisfied customers who are excited to use our services again when the need arises.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What inspired owning my own business was the desire to work for myself so that I could ensure that my customers were receiving a valuable product and so that I could have more flexibility to be with my family. Now, while the latter did not turn out quite as I pictured, I have been blessed to be able to work side-by-side with my husband, and my children have been able to see what can be accomplished through hard work and integrity.
Kitchen remodeling came out of these desires, as it was a business that I knew would have a continual need and because I love to make things beautiful.
Kitchen Tune-Up offers several types of services to meet differing budgets, going from a quick refresh of current cabinets to completely gutting and redesigning a kitchen space to accomplish better everyday practicality.
I have found that one of the major aspects that has set my business apart is honesty and offering products that are a true investment, both of which I am very proud of.
I would love for those interested in our service to know that while there are countless kitchen remodeling options out there, Kitchen Tune-Up upholds ethical business practices and truly wants to give you the kitchen of your dreams without breaking the bank.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
When I purchased Kitchen Tune-Up, it was supposed to be a part-time position that I would do to replace the insurance career that I had been in, but when my husband lost his job shortly after the purchase, he and I chose to fully jump in and turn our business into a full-time gig that could support our family.
Joel (my partner/husband) and I had never worked together prior, and while there’s the occasional butting of heads, we quickly found that he has an excellent head for numbers, and I balance it with creativity and the ability to adapt to each of our client’s needs. With this combination, our business scaled quickly, so we had to learn to manage a team that could keep up with a balance of efficiency and quality work.
Our most significant milestones have come when we have hired team members who take pride in their work and when we have chosen not to shy away from scaling our business as we observed the need.
The choices we’ve made by deciding to work this business together, acquiring a showroom a few years later, and learning to delegate tasks rather than try to control every detail on our own have all brought about their own milestones, and we are excited to see which ones come next!

How’d you meet your business partner?
I don’t think my husband and I ever thought we’d end up being business partners, as we had very different careers prior and because we have very different personalities. But now, after several years of working together, he and I have found that our differences are what make this business work.
He and I met at church and went from friends to partners over the course of about five years. After being married for a few years and having two great kids, we found ourselves owning a business together. We have been very blessed by this business, and if at some point we no longer own this business, my husband and I have both learned so much about each other and ourselves that will only strengthen our marriage partnership for the rest of our lives.
