We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Wassil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My dad was my Mom’s college art teacher. That sounds scandalous but they were close in age and married for 14 years. There were always creative projects developing around the house. My dad did all forms. Woodwork, painting, sculpture… I was lucky to have access to an abundance of art supplies as well as the guidance for my curiosity.
These creative outlets were valuable during my parents divorce. I knew how to keep myself busy by painting or writing. Some sweet memories are of drawing my family members on the back of my dad’s toes in marker, making paper mache’ puppets, getting messy with paint in the backyard and just fully delighting in the creativity.
We were lower middle class and often struggled financially. I am thankful my parents were about to provide the riches of creativity. Creating a world that seemed significantly more interesting than it probably was!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Orlando, Florida and have been inspired by the colorful misfit characters that make up a lot of the population here. The bright colors that seem to glow from the blinding sun have an impact on my work. I used to write and illustrate short stories based on the people I would encounter from near and far. The blue eye shadowed ladies with red lips have a particular place in my art.
When I sit down to paint, I let it intuitively flow on the page. I embrace the whimsy of the process. It is such a reliable way for me to let go of the everyday stressors and anxieties and just exist in the moment.
It’s exciting to see what emerges.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to freely express myself and tap into the mysteries from within. The fact that i am currently trying to live off of that expression, can be intimidating and full of doubt but at the end of the day, if I’m being honest and genuine with my art then I have a feeling of relief and appreciation that I’ve come this far without giving up.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting local artists and small businesses alike are crucial for a thriving ecosystem. Opting to buy from a maker or a small restaurant makes such an impact on the community. Showing up at art markets or open studios for example are great ways to establish a connection to the artists in your community. Spreading the word on your favorite artists and businesses is what keeps us resilient and keeps the world more interesting and thriving. Contributing to the arts ensures that you will have access to a vibrant artistic community in the future!
