Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Vines. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I moved to LA by myself in September of 2021. During the lock down, I had a lot of time to reflect on where my career was and where I wanted to go. I realized the pandemic was the perfect restart for me and I decided to take a leap of faith by moving from Fargo, North Dakota to Los Angeles, California once things started to reopen again. I tried to convince my band that had been playing with me for years to move as well, but after a short visit in May of 2021, they decided to either stay in the area or move to other locations. It was really intimating to make such a big move on my own, but I’m so happy I did. I feel like stepping out of my normal routine and forcing myself in a new environment has made me grow in ways I didn’t even know I could grow. I feel like I’ve become a better musician and human. It hasn’t been easy and I miss the Midwest often, but I’m thankful to have taken a risk on myself and for the growth that’s come from it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started singing when I was 12, but really made it my life when I went to college. I got my degree in Jazz Studies and started writing music after I graduated. I performed in a variety of different groups as I began my music career, but have since settled into my artist project that goes under my name. I feel like I still have some deciding to do with my genre and style, but I aim to make music that allows people to feel connected through common themes and to have a little fun. I love writing music that makes you dance and takes you out of the stresses of the present for a bit.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love getting to be my own boss. I find it difficult when someone else is telling me what I have to do or how I have to do things, especially within a creative project, so it’s been incredibly freeing to be in charge of that. I feel I am able to push myself more and get more done because I am able to work whenever and however is most efficient for me.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The more people can actively seek out music in their local scene, the better the music in the local scene will be. Going out to see artists from their community perform is huge. And if going to shows is not your jam, finding artists from your community on streaming sites/social media and supporting them with a follow goes a long way.
