We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve embarked on is my upcoming feature film, “The Prologue.” While the film is still in the pre-production phase, the journey has already been incredibly transformative. Inspired by a haunting tale penned by Zora Neale Hurston, “The Prologue” is a reimagined narrative that blends elements of blaxploitation and horror to explore themes of identity, heritage, and the supernatural.
Securing funding and forming strategic partnerships have been ongoing challenges, but they’ve also been invaluable learning experiences. Each step of this journey has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. It’s a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved that we continue to push forward, undeterred by the obstacles we face.
Parallel to my filmmaking endeavors, I founded Cinema Green ATL under my film production company, Reel Legacies Media. Cinema Green ATL is a program with a mission close to my heart: to bridge the knowledge gap between film and sustainability. Through this initiative, we aim to educate and inspire filmmakers and audiences alike about the importance of incorporating sustainable practices into the film industry.
“The Prologue” aligns perfectly with the vision of Reel Legacies Media and Cinema Green ATL. As we work tirelessly to bring this film to life, we’re not only striving to create compelling cinema but also to promote sustainability and positive change within the industry. It’s a dual mission that adds layers of meaning and purpose to our work, making every challenge we overcome and every milestone we reach even more rewarding.
As we continue on this journey to bring “The Prologue” from script to screen, I’m filled with a mix of excitement, anticipation, and determination. I believe this film has the potential to spark meaningful conversations, challenge perceptions, and leave a lasting impact on those who experience it. And with the support of our community, strategic partners, and programs like Cinema Green ATL, I’m confident that we can make this vision a reality.
I invite you to join us on this journey, to stay tuned for updates on “The Prologue,” and to be a part of the movement to create a more sustainable and inclusive film industry. Together, we can harness the transformative power of cinema to inspire change, foster creativity, and build a legacy that resonates for generations to come.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative for me is the journey of personal growth and resilience that it fosters. Creativity is not just about producing work; it’s about learning to navigate the challenges, setbacks, and uncertainties that inevitably arise along the way.
One of the most valuable life skills I’ve learned through my creative journey is how to overcome resistance. Whether it’s facing rejection, grappling with self-doubt, or navigating the complexities of the creative process, resilience has been my constant companion. Learning to persevere in the face of adversity, to adapt and evolve when faced with challenges, and to find creative solutions to problems has not only strengthened my artistic practice but has also enriched my life as a whole.
This ability to overcome resistance and embrace resilience has had a profound impact on my work, family, and self-life. In my work, it allows me to approach projects with an open mind, to adapt to changing circumstances, and to find innovative ways to bring my creative vision to life. It enables me to collaborate effectively with others, to learn from feedback, and to continuously grow and evolve as a storyteller and filmmaker.
In my family life, resilience has taught me the importance of patience, understanding, and empathy. It has helped me navigate the ups and downs of companionship, relationships, and personal growth, and has empowered me to be a supportive and compassionate partner, parent, and friend.
On a personal level, embracing resilience has been a source of strength and inspiration. It has taught me to trust in my abilities, to believe in myself, and to embrace the journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. It reminds me that growth often comes from adversity, that challenges are opportunities in disguise, and that with perseverance, creativity, and resilience, anything is possible.
In summary, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the continuous journey of learning, growth, and resilience that it fosters. It’s a life skill that never goes out of style, a source of inspiration and empowerment, and a testament to the transformative power of creativity and resilience in all areas of life.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media for me has been about embracing experimentation to find my unique voice. I’ve learned that creativity thrives in the unknown, so I wasn’t afraid to try new content types, storytelling techniques, and engagement strategies. Through this process, I discovered what resonated with my audience and refined my approach.
My advice for those starting out is to embrace experimentation and authenticity. Don’t be afraid to try new things, stay true to yourself, and share your passion and unique perspective. Consistency is also crucial; stay committed to your vision, post regularly, and engage with your audience. By experimenting, being authentic, and staying consistent, you’ll build a strong and engaged audience that resonates with your message and values.
