We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Sheehy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
It was in a Facebook group, with female entrepreneurs, and they had posted that they were looking for a social media manager to manage all of their platforms for a very small budget. I was hesitant because the pay was so much lower than I was charging for, but when I connected with her on a discovery call I learned that she owns three businesses. Two of which are in the wedding industry. It was a great start to work with her, then her second and third companies, and then I found myself being referred to her network as well. It was worth the risk of “lowering my rates” for a bigger payoff. Even though this was over five years ago, Facebook groups are still a great place to find clients!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the Founder + CEO of Social Savvy, a marketing company specializing in helping small businesses grow on social media through content that converts and proven organic strategies. I have a background in marketing and PR, and always knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I lost my job at a media company in 2018, and decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship to work with clients. I fell in love with crafting holistic marketing strategies where we focused on lead generation, nurturing, and growth.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When it came down to building an audience on social media, two words sum it up: personal brand. People want to connect with people, and by leaning into a personal brand it’s a great way for the audience (followers) to get to know the real YOU. You can share your business advice, tips, etc. to grow your business, but if you really want to connect with people – and connecting is how you sell – it’s through being authentically yourself.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
It all comes down to having great communication with them and anticipating the need to communicate with them. As a marketing agency, we’re very hands on, and like to execute weekly meetings to touch base with our clients, weekly emails that serve as “updates” to their marketing projects, and instant communication channels such as Slack.
