We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Seawell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I realized I wanted to pursue a career in dance around the age of twelve. I began classical dance training at the age of five with a Ballet/Tap combo class and loved every minute of it. Throughout the years I added multiple genres and additional classes to help strengthen my technique allowing me to quickly advance. At that point, I realized dance was something that I wanted to continue as a career. At the age of twelve, I transitioned to the competition world where I began to train under the industry’s most reputable educators and choreographers. Under their instruction, I trained five days a week in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Modern, Lyrical and Contemporary. Expanding my knowledge, developing my technique and having the opportunity to learn under professionals allowed me to successfully perform in an opening ceremony at the Georgia Dome, dance in the Disney’s Christmas Day Parade hosted by ABC Family featuring guest star Neil Patrick Harris, selected to join the Radio City Rockettes in performing in the “World’s Largest Circular Kickline” for the Guinness Book of World Records and won multiple stand out awards and scholarships at national dance competitions and conventions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
After graduating, I started teaching and working for a studio where I developed a certified performing arts education curriculum for grades K-5. Furthering my knowledge of the dance industry allowed me the opportunity to advance my position to director of an award-winning competition studio. During my time as director, I was able to learn more aspects of the dance industry, gain higher-level education and advance my choreography skills. I am known for my meticulous eye for precise movement and specialize in technique, tap, choreography and choreography cleaning. I was approached with multiple opportunities to further my career and join forces with some of the nation’s most elite dance competitions and conventions where I serve as a National Dance Director, National Adjudicator and National Convention Teacher. Becoming part of the renowned competition world has exceeded all expectations in the most uplifting way.
Through my years of learning and educating, I am most proud of how far I have come from the little girl who walked into a dance class for the first time many years ago. I have been blessed to achieve more than I could have ever imagined and am excited to see what the future holds. It has not always been an easy road but the outcome has always been greater than any obstacle along the way.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
Helping students set and achieve their goals.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish intensives would have been more accessible when I first started my training. Intensives and in-house conventions are now offered throughout the year at studios and welcome guest students. Having this resource available to dancers in training allows more opportunity to develop dancers’ education.
