We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have my masters in Special Education and originally worked doing ABA therapy and Operations for a center that treated Autism. When my 3rd baby was born I decided to take time off to spend with my 3 little children. When the baby started preschool I was ready to enter the working scene, but wanted to do something that would still allow me to spend more time with my young children. I thought about all the things I was good at and wrote them down in a brainstorming session early one morning. I slowly scratched off things that either I didn’t think would make enough money, or that I just really didn’t want to do as my job. I landed on professional organizing! My mom had passed away a few years earlier and I was given totes and totes of things that she had saved for me. Going through everything and getting rid of things that no longer suited me and keeping the things that brought me joy was very therapeutic for me. I knew that others would benefit from the feeling of letting go and creating a more organized, simple space to live in. Once I decided what I wanted to do, I hired a business coach to help me get started, created a business plan and contract, and got started with the business that following month. We are going on year 5 being in business and now have a team of organizers that are helping families every day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started this business with just myself and one other organizer. My company was successful and doing well. Two years in to the business my husband decided to start his own business as well which meant he was no longer working at his job and would start planning for the new endeavor. When this happened I was 7 months pregnant with our fourth child and was now the only one bringing in income for our family. I had to increase our business and quickly. I joined networking groups, went to events, messaged people I was connected with on social media, hired additional contractors, and successfully increased our business. I went from a two team operation, to having 8 organizers and being fully booked. It was a crazy time for me, but it was so worth it for our family.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We consider ourselves a luxury service provider and so our marketing has been very niched down. We focus our efforts on a smaller audience that would be more aligned with paying for luxury services. I I have focused on collaborations with services that align with ours like luxury home builders, interior designers, and high end realtors. I have grown my clientele tremendously from those connections alone.
