We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Robinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
So I was so excited, when I check the mail my first year and received a check for 1 dollar from BMI. Hahaha, inspiring because I was like wow, I’m Capable of making money off of my music and that inspired me to create and promote more. My second quarter check was a hundred dollars more and my mechanical royalties totaled $300.00 the second quarter and $500 the next quarter. Man I was so excited that I purchased a few keyboards and drum machines using my royalties. And so I tell everyone who has a passion for music “Hey the money may not come when you want it but stay motivated and keep creating, allow creating fresh new music to be at the top of your mind instead of the money” Build your brand and the money will follow.

Jessica , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well first let me conclude that I have been through it one hell of a struggle it’s like driving through a windstorm with snow And black ice and although you have slid a few times, I never slid off the road. I’m still here I’m still grinding. I first moved here to Atlanta Georgia in 2017 after going through false accusations and a hell of a court trial in North Carolina which left me with absolutely nothing and that’s when I drove down to Atlanta. When I got to Atlanta I don’t have a place to stay, no family, No work. I interview for so many jobs and temp services and no one hired me but I started getting calls on the same day that I got denied a job about being on the film sets. So I did a lot of Background acting work jumping from different shows to doing security on the film sets and that’s how I was able to achieve having some income. I started learning music keeping myself busy I just wanted more out of life I wanted to make myself better as a artist and I wanted to learn how to be a composer. I couldn’t get or find anyone to help me achieve this and I didn’t have much income to pay for The knowledge. So it was this point at my life where my faith became tested and my faith became stronger. I asked God to make me a better Artist, a better mother and a overall better person. I’m mostly proud of myself that I didn’t get distracted and I have always stay focused since I have been in Atlanta I have always kept myself busy learning music, creating and just overall re-learning things that I didn’t learn growing up. I started learning more about business I started praying more and asking God for wisdom and I also pray for the right people to come into my life or no one at all. I spent a lot of time alone and in my alone time I focused and I created nonstop. While everyone was out shopping, having fun, clubbing going on vacations, I was always missing out because I was focused on learning to make myself better than I was the previous day. I am proud that I have attended FullSail and man my music seemed as it went to another level. I have always been semi familiar with notes, keys, chords because I play orchestra and band middle and high school, But Full Sail university had really taught me REAL music knowledge. Now the struggle doesn’t stop because it’s a different struggle. I ran out of financial aid and student loans haha. I recently received my Publishing through BMI as TriplePlatinumWorldwide and my Label as TriplePlatinumMusicLLC and my goal is to work with many artist, businesses, organizations and networks. I’ve noticed there are lots and lots of talented artist with catalogs of music who also want to be heard. I also have other goals outside of music like Non-Profit around Atlanta.
I feel like what separates me from other people is my desire to be successful and I won’t let anything come between that not friends, not hanging out, sex, Relationships or anything. For me it’s business first and I think in that department I am stronger than a lot of people because I can sit at my desk for it 3 to 4 days straight without seeing anyone or talking to anyone. Was separates me from another person is I can’t give up, I don’t need a breaks, Nor am I a procrastinator. I believe in getting it done and with my workflow I can get things done within 10 to 15 minutes and that’s me humbly speaking. What sets me apart is I can continue on with no support whereas most people will give up when I don’t have support. That actually makes me go harder.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Omg yesssss! I wish I had got my business entity in my BMI publishing when I first started that I literally just created a lot of music and posted it online lol but now I am very knowledgeable on mechanical royalties, publishing companies and owning my own copyrights. Sometimes as a creator you just have to unlearn the knowledge and learn it back again the right way and I am still learning today I feel like I only know about 40% about the business. Never stop learning knowledge is power.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
When you are hungry, ambitious as hell as an artist and am ready to take off we need more financial support. Stop making us pay to perform at your average club, DJ’s make sure you show some love to that artist as well and maybe artist should be able to apply for an small Artist grant that’ll help us get the equipment or studio time we need to create. I’ve witnessed a lot of great artist with no money, and I’ve witnessed the artist with money being not as talented as the Broke one. Support that artist. You never know what it’s outcome can be.
