We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Robin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I grew up in New Jersey and went to college in Philadelphia for Interior Design. I remember being so mesmerized by all the murals I would see during my. daily commute while living there. Being surrounded. by art in that form was impactful on my journey and inspired me to start painting. I have always been drawn to large scale art and loved the idea of doing murals. At that point I have never painted artistically besides whatever I could get my hands on growing up. In my early 20’s I started painting for fun and posted something I did online and from there started selling commissions. From there I wanted to challenge myself and painted my first couple murals in my apartment. A few months after I completed that I got my first client and from there have been growing my business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I love creating large scale art and transforming spaces. I specialize in florals and botanical pieces with vibrant colors. I enjoy creating art that inspires people and brings joy. My favorite compliment from my clients and the people that see my work is how it makes them feel. I’ve always been outdoorsy and a huge flower nerd so painting things that inspire me from nature is very fitting for me. When it comes to that style of art particularly the ideas seem to be endless and organic.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
For the first couple of years starting out doing murals I had a full-time job that was very demanding and left little to no time to do anything artistic. I would still put as much time as I could when I did have any downtime from work. During covid my job had to shut down for a few months and I was able to spend 3 months really honing in on my skills. Once I had to go back I realized I needed to find something that had some more flexibility so I could continue putting time into my art. I juggled this for quite some time and eventually it came to a point where I would have to say no to doing mural jobs. From that point I realized I needed to take the leap of faith and just go for it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think a huge lesson for me has been learning to not compare myself to others, feel like I am enough and believe this path is possible for me. I think as an artist it’s challenging at times to not compare yourself to others. I admire so many different artists and their skill level. Art is HARD! LOL and it takes years and years to sharpen your skills and its forever a learning process. There’s definitely room for all of us out there and different forms of art resonate with different people, you just have to find your audience!
