We recently connected with Jessica Restel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My grandfather is actually my hero! One of the most important things he ever taught to me was to never give up on my dreams. He always believed in us. He gave up everything he ever knew, his family, his friends, to come to the US on the Freedom Flights, to give us a better life. It is something I will always be thankful for and strive to make sure his sacrifices don’t go unnoticed.
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a second generation Cuban American and mother of two kids, one of which is on the spectrum.
I got into my craft originally as a grief outlet. My grandfather died a couple of months before my 6th birthday and I really struggled with his loss since we were so close. My mom was taking cake decorating classes with some of the adult night classes in town and thought it’d be a good way for me to get out my emotions, and I’ve been baking ever since!
I run a small cottage bakery and I sell everything from small personal cakes, to specialty brownies!
One of the things I’m most proud of is competing in the Greatest Baker competition in 2022 and 2023. All of my work comes directly from my heart and soul and I’m really excited to share it with the world, and open up a storefront!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I put together my capital by hard work for many years. I’ve saved money from every job I’ve worked at since I was 16 until I could afford to officially launch. I took odd jobs on addition to my main one even while going to college and being a mom.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes! The Coffee Bean by Jon Gordon. It doesn’t just apply to my entrepreneurial thinking but my every day life. I feel it’s one of those books that everyone needs to read at least once in their life.
