We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Reese recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was the girl in the dorms in college that was doing everyone’s hair and make-up. Although I have always known very succinctly that I enjoy affecting how a woman feels when she looks in the mirror. I followed the blueprint that was laid out for me. Graduated, took a job with a Fortune 5 company, got married and bought a house. Upon getting pregnant, I was placed on bedrest from July to November. Over that time, i had plenty of time to think and ponder my life. After giving birth, I felt myself loathing to return to the work force and decided to give up my “Golden Hand-Cuffs”, (company car, expense account, big bonuses, etc.) and follow my own dreams and passions. Looking at my infant son, I knew I could not raise him telling him he could be and do anything he wanted all the while I am not. There are many people who are not happy or fulfilled, but do not know what they want to do. That was not my story! I knew very well what made me happy! So, I betted on me and walked away from it all to enroll into cosmetology school. Everyone thought I was crazy, however it was the best decision I’ve ever made!
As I was approaching the end of cosmetology school and looking around to potentially find a home to take my skills i was at a loss. There were no salons in my area that felt like the place I would create and provide the experience I wanted to give my clients. As the old adage says, necessity is the mother of invention. Thus the creation of what would become a. Full Beauty Brand, The Pynk Butterfly, Where Beauty Meets Evolution. Since 2006, I’ve facilitated the opening of 6 salons (The Salon by PYNK) domestically, 1 internationally, a full line of healthy hair care product line (PYNK Products), and now the first of what will be many salon suite locations (The Suite Spot by PYNK).
I truly believe that professional hair care services can be provided and delivered in a fun yet professional environment.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I consider myself the modern day Madam C.J. Walker. I provide spaces (Salons and Suites), products, and top notch education (The Pynk Academy) for beauty professional to help them turn their craft into cash.
I am so proud of the number of professionals that have come through the doors of PYNK and have been inspired and motivated to go on into business ownership. Additionally, I am so proud of the work we do in the community. I believe that giving back in the community in which I do business is paramount.
Wether you are a client or beauty professional, I seek to create an environment that fosters evolution.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
From the start of The Pynk Butterfly, it was important to really press the idea of evolution. Many people think hair is trivial, however I disagree. If I can affect how a woman sees herself in the mirror by giving her a style she has always wanted or never thought possible she immediately feel more confident That confidence follows her to her home, her job and how she shows up in the world.
Transformation pictures and reaction videos have always been a staple in the content in which we post.
The most important thing is consistency, no matter how good the content.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I learned that I get to decide for me what my life looks like. In the face of family expectations, societal pressures or self inflicted ideas of perfection, i get to decide and have the power to create the life I want!
