We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Owusu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My name is Jessie and I’m a 1st generation college graduate, natural hairstylist, and certified loctician. I come from a family that migrated from Ghana. My mission as a hairstylist is to provide and create affordable looks for customers. My mission is important as it helps drive the meaning of my business. In Ghana, hair businesses are lucrative and productive, as there are rises in natural and extension hairstyles, and natural hair products. Coming from such a background not only encouraged me to branch into these skills but also motivate myself to continue improving within the business and provide great care to customers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business, JessieRose Hair and Beauty, started when I was in college as a side skill. My classmates would ask me to do their hair before or after class. I provide services such as braiding, loc care, natural hair services, wigs/bundles and closures, and hair products such as styling tools, gels, oils, etc. I help customers feel and look better with the styles they choose. I believe that my business speaks for itself as I’m a dedicated perfectionist that works hard. I’m proud for starting my business on my own, how far it’s going, and will go.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Being a loctician is a part time job but before becoming a loctician, I had worked retail and also as a preschool
teacher. I had left being a teacher to work retail and start my business. I’ve changed careers several times but I found my way back to being a loctician. Not only is it a hobby but I’ve realized that it’s a skill. I enjoy these skills and hope to increase within the field.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media is the best way to reach clients. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. are the social medias that I would recommend to others. Also promoting any websites, not only within those social media accounts, but where you’re able to, helps grow an audience and show the list of services you provide.
