Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Post Covid and now inflation has been a challenge to a small business like myself. As the vendors I use for my candles, have all increased their prices for supplies. So now as a business you have to redo your numbers, that were previously based on old costs. Which more than likely will drive your prices up. However, my business I created to be luxury feel candles for less. So I have been faced with the challenge of being true to my luxury for less. While not operating at a deficit. So I have had to go back to the drawing board to evaluate my costs and adjust as needed.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jessica Norwood. I own and operate Melodic Glow Candle Co. Which is an online luxury for less candle business. Our products are comprised of candle, wax melts, candle accessories, stationary, bath products, and mugs. However, our speciality are our candles and wax melts.
Which our brand is musically inspired candles, hence all candles are named after song titles. Our motto is set the vibe under one of our scented glows. All of our candles are hand poured upon ordering. Our brand fits the need where you love luxury candles, but do not want to break the bank buying candles. Melodic Glow Candles are all natural coconut & soy wax with cotton wicks. Everything down to our candle vessels and colors are aesthetically pleasing. As we strive to fit the vibe in whatever home space that our candles are set in.
I am most proud that we are owned and operating by an African American woman. We have grown organically via social media. Which is mainly due to owner Jessica taking notes of customer preferences and offering suggestions. Going the extra mile to make the customer experience memorable matters more than anyone knows.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Currently my business is solely funded out of pocket by myself. Outside of my candle business, I have a career in commercial real estate. Which affords me to be able to find my business as needed.
We are currently still operating at a smaller scale. Which demands are not overwhelming financially. As we grow and demands increase. I have set a plan in place to seek outside funding.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I mainly keep in touch with my customers on social media. I encourage them posting their candles, and tagging our social media. I offer incentives such as discount codes, or little freebies when they order candles. I also offer recommendations on candle scents by engaging in conversations with potential and established customers.
I find social media as being more effective to reach my customer base. As everyone is on social media constantly. However, I also utilize email list as well.
